Twenty times in the past three years, Iranian forces have tried to board foreign-flagged commercial vessels sailing through the narrow Strait of Hormuz into or out of the Persian Gulf. And twice in the span of just a couple weeks this spring, they succeeded – seizing one vessel whose crew they accused of colliding with an Iranian vessel, and another they claimed was involved in a legal dispute in Iran.
 
This could end badly … for the Iranians. It’s happened before.

After Iranian gunboats opened fire on the Bahamas-flagged tanker Richmond Voyager on July 5, the Pentagon finally lost patience. It announced it would deploy a destroyer and F-16 and F-35 fighters to reinforce US forces – including F-22 stealth fighters and a pair of destroyers – already in the Middle East. The extra forces would “defend US interests and safeguard freedom of navigation in the region,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said.

If all this seems familiar, it’s because it is. Iranian forces have harassed Persian Gulf shipping off and on for decades. More than once, the harassment – and the American response – have escalated into open air and naval warfare. Each time, it was a disaster for Tehran.

Iranian "navy" craft that get within 500 meters of any commercial ship need to meet Lt. Commander BRRRRRRT!. A few cannon shells should ruin the day for the Iranian "navy" craft and crew ... permanently.

Why is America expending treasure to protect other nations' - China, Japan, India, Europe - oil supplies?

Where is it written in the Constitution that the US Navy has to be the sole global guarantor of Freedom of Navigation and Freedom of the Seas?

During the Cold War, it was in America's interest to backfill the void left by the collapse of the British Empire, but we don't need Middle East oil anymore.

  OK, lets pretend that none of the oil the US uses comes through the Strait of Hormuz. So Iran interdicts oil used by "China, Japan, India, Europe" and the rest of the world. Worldwide supply shrinks, while worldwide demand does not. Supply-and-Demand happens and the entire world is paying much higher oil prices, including the US.

That's what the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is for, and what energy independence was supposed to for - to insulate (not isolate) American from MidEast Petro-economics and Petro-diplomacy.

Let the Chi-coms or the Europeans shed their blood and treasure to save their economies.

We are less dependent on Middle East oil than India, Japan, China, and Europe.

America's armed forces should not be used as a mercenary force to protect the Saudi Royal Family and to keep them in power.

Other powers have a greater stake in Persian Gulf oil than America.

Plus, new hydrocarbon discoveries are beginning to be developed in Latin America and Africa, where energy companies can still explore and develop new supplies - Guyana, Namibia, etc.

The F-16 has an internal 20 mm cannon and can carry rocket pods and several different air-to-ground and anti-ship missiles.

The F-35 can carry several different air-to-ground missiles and has an internal 25 mm cannon.

The A-10 has a 30 mm cannon and can carry rocket pods and at least one type of air-to-ground missile.

These planes are all deployed to the area. Is there a need to mention the weaponry carried by the Arleigh Burke class destroyer deployed in the area?

I seriously doubt that my Muslim coworkers - engineers and engineering managers - learned their tech specialties from their Muslim leaders.
