Boston Medical Center ended a policy that allowed migrant and homeless families from sheltering overnight at the hospital, according to several media reports.
Massachusetts is a right-to-shelter state and the government is responsible for providing care for some homeless families, including migrants. More than 100 migrant families arrived at Boston Medical Center one day last week in search of shelter, The Boston Globe reported, and it’s created an untenable situation for the hospital, a spokesperson told MassLive.
“Our teams have worked together for months on different approaches to help these families,” Michelle Falinski, a spokesperson for Boston Medical Center, said in a statement. “Despite this, the collective actions do not yet meet the size of the crisis.”
The hospital recently experienced the highest number of unhoused migrant families seeking shelter, Falinski said.
Falinski said that Boston Medical Center does not have a policy specific to supporting displaced, unhoused migrant families.
