Six people were indicted in New York City for conspiring in an alleged fraud scheme involving straw-poll donations tied to the campaign of Mayor Eric Adams, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Friday.

According to the indictment, the scheme consisted of illegally structuring campaign contributions to maximize the amount of additional money gained through the New York City Matching Funds Program for Adams’ campaign. The mayor wasn’t accused of any wrongdoing.

“We allege a deliberate scheme to game the system in a blatant attempt to gain power,” Bragg said in a statement. “The indictment charges the defendants with subverting campaign finance laws by improperly structuring campaign contributions.”  ...

This is exactly why there should be no public/government financing of political campaigns.

Those public funds could have been better spent on rigged city trash removal contracts or for bicycle lanes on the subway tracks.

The surprise would have been if his campaign financing had been 100% legal.
