The Navy’s carrier-launched F/A-18 Super Hornet Block III has already outlived expectations.

It has flown years beyond its planned service life, and it may live to fly and fight well into the future.

In recent years, the famous fighter has received new cockpit displays, infrared targeting technology, conformal fuel tanks, weapons upgrades, external weapons pods, and a special glide slope carrier landing software called a “magic carpet.” This is not a comprehensive list.
 
As is often the case with successful platforms such as the B-52 or F-16, the F/A-18 airframes have remained viable for thousands of flight hours beyond the initially planned-for 6,000 mission hours. After a series of upgrades, sustainment efforts and service life extension plans, the platform is now slated to fly up to 10,000 combat hours.

I'm so old I remember when some Congress-Critters during the Carter MalAdministration tried to kill the Hornet before it got into the production prototype stage. At the time I worked at a company that made cockpit displays for military aircraft, on its F/A-18 project, and it gave an interesting perspective on defense industries. The paperwork and engineering change processes were insane. More to the point, it was "delightful" knowing that one's job could be killed by an anti-military Congress who knew less than zero about the programs they were trying to kill and the people whose futures they were trying to put on hold or destroy.

It is no mystery to me why companies are reluctant to dive into defense work and new companies formed to do defense work are rare almost to the point of non-existent.

Ted Kennedy's and John Kerry's anti-defense stance put my father in the unemployment line mutliple times during his career in the Defense sector.  After the Peace Dividend of the early 1990s, my father had to transition to telecommunications and medical technology because many of the Defense companies on Route 128, in Mass, went out of business.

Ted Kennedy and John Kerry killed off much of the Massachusetts Defense tech firms in the early 1990s.

It's bizzarre how liberal Mass politicians work to harm their own working-class constituents to ingratiate themselves with limousine liberals donors and voters.
