The Russian Ministry of Defense has classified the number of its soldiers disabled during the “Special Military Operation” (SMO), but the count is all but certainly in the tens of thousands — and it continues to rise. The country’s healthcare system is overwhelmed: returning soldiers face months-long waits for treatment, prosthetics are scarce, some parts are unavailable due to sanctions, and the quality is often poor. Many newly fitted prosthetics become unusable within weeks. In Ukraine, the situation is somewhat better; soldiers can undergo rehabilitation and receive high-quality prosthetics in the West. However, they still encounter bureaucratic obstacles that are hardly different from those in Russia. Meanwhile, Israel, with its decades of experience of conflict, has successfully developed a system to support disabled soldiers.

Semyon K. (name changed), a member of the Wagner PMC, lost his leg in the war in Ukraine. He and several other wounded soldiers were evacuated to St. Petersburg, where, according to his wife, he “waited for a prosthetic leg” for two months, staying in one of Yevgeny Prigozhin's apartments on Vasilyevsky Island. After finally receiving the prosthesis, Semyon went to the city of Anapa on the Black Sea coast, where the artificial limb had to be adjusted multiple times. “Either the socket would break, or the rubber liner meant to secure the socket to his leg was too large. And then, when Wagner disbanded, there was no place left to fix the prosthesis,” Semyon’s wife told The Insider.

After several months of filing down the prosthesis himself and wearing socks over his shrinking stump, Semyon was finally received at the Southern Regional Prosthetics Center in Krasnodar. There, the doctor who examined his leg found that the prosthetic socket was homemade, and the German liner was two sizes too big.  .  .  .

Sir Keir Starmer is set to press Joe Biden to approve Ukrainian use of Storm Shadow missiles on Russian soil at a New York summit.

The Prime Minister has suggested he will press the US president to drop his veto when the pair meet at the UN General Assembly.

But he insisted that long-range strikes were not the only key to a Ukrainian victory as the White House resists pressure to change policy.

Sir Keir was speaking aboard the government plane en route to the UN General Assembly, where help for Ukraine was set to dominate discussions.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, is expected to use the occasion to lay out Kyiv’s “plan for victory” to key Western allies.

Sir Keir was asked whether he would authorise the use of Storm Shadow, which at present can only be deployed within Ukraine, on Russian soil.  .  .  .

The one thing that Trump can do to end this war is to drop the price of oil by two-thirds.  Do that, and both Russia and Iran will no longer be able to wage war, much less remain viable governments.

Russian soldiers, blockaded in the Vovchansk Aggregate Plant reportedly ate stray dog meat and even parts of their fallen comrades, said commander of the “Stugna” unit, a special unit of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), with the call sign “Linux,” in an interview with Liga.net on September 27.

Around 80 Russians, led by special forces officers from Russian military intelligence, were stationed at the blockaded facility. Most of the enemy group was destroyed, and around 20 Russian soldiers were taken prisoner.

The commanders of the trapped Russian troops, who were part of the Russian special forces, maintained discipline through total fear, violence, and executions.

Captured Russians told Ukrainian soldiers that several wounded Russian soldiers committed suicide because they had not received medical assistance for a long time, and their condition was deteriorating.

They added that hunger at the plant reached such extreme levels that the Russians killed and ate several stray dogs that were roaming the area.

According to the prisoners, they even considered eating livers of dead Russian soldiers. There is suspicion that they may have actually done this, as Ukrainian soldiers observed bodies of deceased Russians with pieces of flesh and various organs missing.  .  .

Ukrainian Generation Z has been born to a free and independent Ukraine—the only Ukraine they’ve ever known and the only one they want to live in. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, these young Ukrainians faced the stark reality that had loomed over their adolescence: Russia’s war.

Since 2015, Ukraine’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has tracked its youth perspectives. In a 2023 poll, over 80% rejected territorial concessions for peace, calling instead for Russia’s demilitarization, nuclear disarmament, and a buffer zone, while advocating for stronger Ukrainian military capabilities.

We spoke with six Ukrainian young adults who joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2022 to defend their country: Dany, Ivan, Kyrylo, Maksym, Oleksandr, and Typhoon. They come from various corners of Ukraine and have unique journeys to this decision. Their motivations and experiences, however, share a common goal: to protect their homes and loved ones.

Growing up with Russia’s aggression
At just 16, Dany’s understanding of the war was still childlike. Yet, she grew up fast. Her fight first started when Russia’s grip tightened on Luhansk. “My friends and I would paint Ukrainian flags on walls, attend pro-Ukrainian rallies, and try, in our naive, childish way, to disrupt the Russian propaganda. We’d paint over Russian symbols with Ukrainian ones. Often, ‘militants’ would stop us, threatening to shoot us in the knees or take us to the basement. They’d find our blue and yellow paint and ask what it was for. We’d reply, ‘It’s blue and yellow; what do you think it’s for?’ They were so dumb.”
