On September 20, Russia attempted another test of its RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, which reportedly ended in failure. The missile, touted by Russia as a key component of its strategic deterrent, exploded in its launch silo, leaving a massive crater and causing significant damage to the test site, according to OSINT analyst MeNMyRC. This marks the fourth unsuccessful test of the Sarmat missile, which Russia previously claimed had been placed on combat alert.

Satellite imagery from Planet Labs, shared by MeNMyRC, indicates that the explosion likely occurred during the fueling process. The RS-28 is a liquid-fueled missile, which could explain why the failure occurred before launch. The absence of activity from the NATO reconnaissance unit “Cobra Ball” on the day of the test supports the theory that the explosion happened prior to any launch sequence.

The missile’s failure, captured on satellite imagery, is the latest in a series of setbacks for Russia’s strategic missile program. The first and only successful test of the RS-28 Sarmat took place in April 2022. Since then, Russia has encountered repeated difficulties, with four unsuccessful tests to date.  .  .

In a surprising development, Russia has seemingly formed a mechanised battalion from the crew of its only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov.

Initially stationed in the Kharkiv region, the battalion has since been redeployed to the Pokrovsk sector, according to the Ukrainian military. The formation of the battalion came to light after a message was shared on Russian social media platform Vkontakte, requesting help in locating personnel from military unit 78987.

This unit recently gained attention following the disappearance of Oleg Sosedov, a sailor from the Admiral Kuznetsov, who went missing during a Russian operation in the Kharkiv region in July. Sosedov, also linked to the battalion, was last seen during an assault on the frontier village of Sotnytskii Kozachok.

Additionally, reports indicate that Russia is also forming infantry units from members of its Aerospace Forces, with these new units playing a role in battles around Kursk.

The Admiral Kuznetsov has faced numerous setbacks since being withdrawn from service for repairs in 2017. Originally planned for modernisation to extend its service life by 25 years, the ship’s overhaul has been continuously delayed by accidents and technical challenges.

One incident occurred in October 2018 when the PD-50 drydock, housing the carrier, sank, damaging the vessel and killing a worker. A crane collapse caused significant damage to the flight deck, further delaying the repair process. The carrier was later moved to the 35th Ship Repair Plant in Murmansk. The difficulties continued. In December 2019, a major fire broke out onboard, killing two workers and injuring more than a dozen others, adding to the delays. Initially expected to return to service by 2023, the completion of repairs has been repeatedly postponed, with current estimates suggesting the ship may not be handed over to the Russian Navy until 2024 or 2025.  .  .

* Isn't that structure a huge target that when hit could topple that nice SAM system into the sea?

* Who gets the "fun" of reloading that SAM system after it fires off missiles? At the least it seems like the several 10s of feet of gained altitude will multiply the effort needed to reload.

The Kuznetsov has suffered the drydock collapse and two major fires since 2018. It's undergoing a near-rebuild (with finest Russian quality, no doubt). This transfer of skilled personnel suggests that Putin & minions do not anticipate the Kuznetsov becoming a useable fleet element any year soon (it's in Murmansk, so the ship is basically irrelevant and not useful to the Ukraine invasion).

This is because Trump will end the open pipeline between the U.S. Treasury Department and Zelensky's bank account.

“This is Russian warship, you need to leave the area”, was the message chief mate Øystein Orten got over the radio as his crew was about to take the fishing gear up from the water.

It was news online FriFagbevegelse that first talked with the crew of the fishing boat Ragnhild Kristine about the scary confrontation with the Russian navy in the Barents Sea.

The incident happened on September 12th in the maritime border areas north of the Varanger Peninsula. Outside territorial waters, but in Norwegian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Here, Russia’s Northern Fleet had pre-annonced live shootings as part of the large-scale strategic exercise Ocean-2024.

But the military exercise and the order to sail away didn’t at first scare the Norwegians.

“I replied that it was out of question for us to move. We had longlines to take onboard,” Orten told to FriFagbevegelse.

The Admiral Levchenko is an anti-submarine destroyer and one of the largest warships in the Northern Fleet.  .  .  .
