Three Democrats Facing Expulsion From Tennessee Legislature for Aiding the 'Transurrection'

Monday, three Tennessee bolsheviks were stripped of their committee assignments and locked out of the Tennessee Capitol because of their leading role in the “Transurrection” that took over the capitol building last Wednesday (WATCH: Left-Wing Protesters Storm TN Capitol, Insurrection Reaches the Legislative Chamber).

State Representatives Gloria Johnson and Justin Jones were notified by the Clerk of the Tennessee House of Representatives that they had been stripped of all committee assignments. A third representative, Justin Pearson (Justin as a first name seems to be a thing amount Tennessee Democrats), had no committee assignments. Their ability to enter the legislative facilities was restricted in a separate action.

The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel state Rep. Gloria Johnson (D) Thursday and the vote for expulsion failed to pass.

The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel state Rep. Gloria Johnson (D) Thursday and the vote for expulsion failed to pass.

The Tennessean reported that the effort to remove Johnson failed by one vote.

The vote was 65-30 after seven Republican House members voted against removing her.

The seven Republicans were Rep. Jody Barrett (R-Dickson), Rep. Charlie Baum (R-Murfreesboro), Rep. Rush Bricken (R-Tullahoma), Rep. Bryan Richey (R-Maryville), Rep. Lowell Russell (R-Vonore), Rep. Mike Sparks (R-Smyrna) and Rep. Sam Whitson (R-Franklin).

The vote on Johnson came on the same day that the Tennessee House voted to expel Rep. Justin Jones (D) from office.

Breitbart News noted CNN’s report that Jones was removed by a vote of 75-25.

Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton noted that Jones, Johnson, and Rep. Justin Pearson (D) were facing possible expulsion for allegedly “breaking several rules of decorum and procedure on the House floor” during gun control protests last week. The Tennessean reported that Johnson, Jones, and Pearson allegedly used “a bullhorn” as they “led protestors in the galleries in several chants calling for gun reform.”

Watching the video that was released--over Democratic objections--it appeared Johnson played a far less active role in the takeover/occupation than did Jones and Pearson.

Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) said his race played a role in his expulsion from the state House on Thursday.

“I basically had a member call me an uppity Negro,” Jones, who is Black, told MSNBC’s Joy Reid after the 72-25 vote that expelled him.

“It’s not about me, but it’s about the 78,000 people I represent,” he added, noting his constituents would be disenfranchised because of his expulsion.

A majority of Nashville Metropolitan Council members pledged they would vote to reinstate former state Rep. Justin Jones. Jones and fellow Democratic Rep. Justin Pearson were expelled from the House for a protest in favor of gun control.

At least 23 of the 39-member council either announced on social media or told NBC News that they condemned Thursday's expulsion and would vote to reinstate Jones as early as possible. The council is slated to hold a special meeting on Monday to decide whether to replace or reinstate the expelled state representative.

Several council members told NBC News that hundreds of their constituents had reached out decrying Thursday's decision and demanding Jones's reinstatement.

“They removed the voice from 140,000 people who voted for them," Council member Burkley Allen told the outlet. "It’s a terrible precedent to set, that 'we disagree with you and you’ve disrupted our House proceedings and therefore we’re expelling you.' That’s not the way democracy works.”

The pledge means that Jones will likely be reinstated to his position — a possibility that Republicans made clear they were aware of during the over six-and-a-half-hour-long debate before the vote to expel Jones. Rep. Gino Bulso (R) specifically denounced the notion that the expulsion was undemocratic. He argued that his constituents could vote him back in after the expulsion.

A majority of the Nashville Metro Council plans to vote to reinstate former state Rep. Justin Jones (D) after he was expelled Thursday from the state House over his participation in a protest against gun violence on the chamber floor.

At least 22 members of the 40-seat city council have tweeted to declare their support for reappointing Jones to his seat since he was removed by the GOP-dominated state House. The members have denounced the effort from Republicans to oust him and asserted that his constituents want him back to represent them.

NBC News reported that 23 members confirmed online or to the outlet that they will vote to reappoint Jones, while The Tennessean reported that at least 28 members support Jones’s return.

Jones and state Rep. Justin Pearson (D) were kicked out of the House after they participated in a gun violence protest on the House floor in the days following last week’s shooting at a Nashville elementary school where three students and three staff members were killed.

State Rep. Gloria Johnson (D) also participated in the protest, but the House fell short of the votes necessary to remove her.
