A number of plastics leach nasty chemicals, including the mold release agents, into whatever liquid is put into them. Not recommended for consumables, red neck or not...

Well, it's hard to find glass in that size.

I've seen that done many times around here in the uncivilized country.
We used (new) galvanized cans for "Purple Jesus" parties in college. Any red wine and any clear spirits and chunks of fruit got mixed in. Serious hangovers followed..

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

No need to be glass. Just be picky about the type of plastic and if it is food grade or not. Especially with kids drinking from it. Old plastic 5 gallon water bottles would be fine.

So what you're saying is a 250 gal. food grade tote would be fine... But that would be hard to put on the counter.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Wasn't it to keep the recorded material from being erased?

The opposite.  If the opening was there, the tape was write-protected and couldn't be recorded over; so one would cover the opening with tape if one wanted to record something else on that cassette.

Yep, break off the plastic tab at the front opening of the small cavity and it was write protected. 5-1/4" Floppies were the opposite if I remember correctly...

Purpose
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
