I had an interview that actually had that question and responded that I needed a job and they had one I was well qualified for(they agreed) but at the end the interviewer through in "you know you really wouldn't fit in here". The last was not about skills or ability, it was the supervisor telling me I was too White for their shop.

No,he wasn't. He didn't even have poor eyesight. He wore the shades because he was shy,and he didn't want people to see the fear in his eyes as he was performing.

Roy Orbison did have poor eyesight.
Roy Orbison did indeed have to wear glasses but his eyesight was not so poor that he couldn't drive. All of the bunk about his eyesight and rumors about being blind go back to when he forgot the glasses he normally wore performing on a plane and had to wear his tinted prescription glasses....which quickly became a trademark.

Let me ad that Orbison himself is supposed to have said
So, if he wasn’t blind, what was the real story behind Orbison’s trademark sunglasses-clad look? Well, according to Orbison himself, the reason behind his on-stage appearance was that he didn’t have a manager or stylist, so he just went out there wearing whatever he felt comfortable in. He simply put the shades on one day, felt good performing in them, and never looked back.

 It's a little late to ask the man which story is true.

No,he wasn't. He didn't even have poor eyesight. He wore the shades because he was shy,and he didn't want people to see the fear in his eyes as he was performing.
There is this
On a fateful day during his 1963 tour with the Beatles, Orbison left his glasses on the plane before a show, which forced him to wear his unsightly prescription sunglasses for that night's show. Although he considered the incident "embarrassing," the look became an instant trademark.

And then supposedly from Orbison himself
So, if he wasn’t blind, what was the real story behind Orbison’s trademark sunglasses-clad look? Well, according to Orbison himself, the reason behind his on-stage appearance was that he didn’t have a manager or stylist, so he just went out there wearing whatever he felt comfortable in. I was speechless
That's true. Twice. Had two girlfriends who broke up with me.
Then they would call up to weeks later and YELL at me for not calling them anymore.
Even when they were already dating someone else? Women are weird.
One was furious that I was not 'stalking' her. She had totally prepared for it.
When she brought it up, told her I would rather watch TV than anything she was doing.
Sometimes she would call and not say anything, just hang on the phone ... silent.
Women are weird.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
