Earlier this week, Musk's measures to protect free speech on Twitter, including the elimination of its COVID "misinformation policy," were met with a promise by the White House to keep "a close eye" on the social media platform.

The new Twitter owner made it clear he believes the stakes are high.

"This is a battle for the future of civilization. If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead," he tweeted Monday.

On Monday night, some Twitter users noticed the platform had dropped its COVID-19 misinformation policy. A post on the "transparency page of Twitter's website said: "Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misinformation policy."

During the pandemic, many censored or suppressed tweets, labeled "misinformation," expressed viewpoints that are now acknowledged to be true or legitimate arguments, such as the ineffectiveness of masks, lockdowns and vaccines, and the theory that SARS-CoV-2 originated in a lab in Wuhan, China.

SARS-CoV-2 may have been released from a lab in China, but it originated in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The research was moved to Wuhan in 2015, and two of the researchers on that North Carolina team were from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Elon Musk attacked The New York Times on Saturday for not covering his expose of how Twitter executives were urged by Biden staff to delete tweets relating to the damaging contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Other left-leaning outlets including CBS News, ABC and The Washington Post are also yet to cover the ‘Twitter Files’, despite their contents causing a sensation among American conservatives and free-speech advocates.

In response to the alleged lack of coverage from the Times, Musk described the newspaper as an ‘unregistered lobbying firm for far left politicians’.

The comment came in response to a tweet from conservative radio host Clay Travis, who said, ‘There is not one single article about @elonmusk or the @twitter email release last night on @nytimes app this morning.’

Musk responded: ‘That is because The New York Times has become, for all intents and purposes, an unregistered lobbying firm for far left politicians’.

Elon Musk has slammed journalists who are criticizing Matt Taibbi for releasing documents about Twitter's suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

In a Twitter Spaces call on Saturday, the 51-year-old billionaire said reporters who are smearing Taibbi for revealing how the social media giant took down tweets about Biden's laptop should 'look in the mirror' and confront their own deceitfulness to 'the American people,' saying they were 'not being truthful' about the story.

Taibbi, 52, has faced backlash from journalists — primarily from MSNBC — trashing his ethics and standards since his exposé revealing how Twitter executives were urged by Biden staff to delete tweets relating to the damaging contents of Hunter Biden's laptop.

Many of the tweets disparaging the American author repeated the same themes, claiming he was just doing public relations for the world's richest man and did not understand limitations to the First Amendment, Mediaite reports. 

But in his Twitter Spaces call on Saturday, Musk said he has 'read hardly any of the Twitter files' as he is focused on 'just getting Twitter healthy.'

Instead, Musk said, he left it up to Taibbi and journalist Bari Weiss to reveal what they thought the American public should know, according to Mediaite reports, indicating he told the journalists to expose whatever they thought was of public interest.

Then on Friday, Taibbi detailed how Twitter staff discussed censoring a New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop, even alluding to requests from Biden's team to do so.

'Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be 'unsafe,' Taibbi wrote. 'They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography.'

Notably, in one exchange a Twitter executive emailed another a list of tweets with the instruction, 'More to review from the Biden team.'

The other executive responded: 'handled these'.

But many woke journalists slammed Taibbi, a former Rolling Stone politics correspondent, for releasing the documents, saying he did not understand journalistic ethics — while others said he was simply doing public relations for the world's richest man.

“I’m grateful. I don’t know how many people know but I basically was financially ruined by Twitter last year. I tried to save my career because Twitter labeled my actions hacking,” John Paul Mac Isaac said in an interview Sunday on Fox News, noting that he sued the company for defamation.

“So obviously watching Elon release this material Friday night was very exciting for me because what I felt like I knew the whole time was true. And I feel vindicated,” he said.

He also said that things could have turned out differently for him and his legal challenges had Musk owned Twitter earlier.

“If he had bought Twitter during the lawsuit, I think things would have worked out a little bit better for me. But you know, it is what it is. And I’m grateful that the truth is coming out now and that I’m vindicated,” Mac Isaac said, joking that if Musk wants free tech support, “he’s got it.”

Baker is a controversial figure. He has been something of a Zelig of FBI controversies dating back to 2016, from the Steele Dossier to the Alfa-Server mess. He resigned in 2018 after an investigation into leaks to the press.

Elon Musk said that Twitter's former Deputy General Counsel Jim Baker was "exited" from the company on Tuesday after revelations about his role in the platform's handling of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Baker was involved in discussions about whether the laptop falls under Twitter's "hacked materials" policy.

"I support the conclusion that we need more facts to assess whether the materials were hacked," Baker wrote in one email chain. "At this stage, however, it's reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that caution is warranted."

Baker was responding to a Twitter executive who was wondering whether they could "truthfully claim" that the laptop story was "part of the policy."

Before joining Twitter, Baker worked as general counsel at the FBI, where he was involved in the bureau's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Taibbi said Tuesday that he and another journalist, Bari Weiss, were dealing "with obstacles to new searches" when Weiss discovered that Baker was responsible for releasing the files over the weekend.

"The news that Baker was reviewing the 'Twitter files' surprised everyone involved, to say the least," Taibbi

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., told "Fox & Friends First" on Monday that the House Oversight Committee will likely call Baker and other Twitter executives to testify about their handling of the laptop story.

"Baker and [former Twitter executive] Vijaya Gadde are probably the two most high-profile Twitter employees that we want to hear from," Comer said. "My advice to them is, prior to coming before the Oversight Committee in January or February, as quick as we can get them in front of the oversight committee, is they need to look very hard to try to find evidence as to why they suppressed this story."

Baker could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.
