In my day most of those listed didn't exist ... except M&Ms.  My absolute favorite candy was Root Beer Barrels.  I never had them except on Halloween!

Me?  I was always partial to Hershey's Milk Chocolate.  I would grab some bars or a handful of kisses and raid the refrigerator for cold milk to accompany my chocolate binge.  Loved it.  Mom would smile and shake her head.

This time of year exclusively... candy corn mixed with peanuts... A long tradition in my house, always put out in candy dishes all over the house.

As to the rest, tarty stuff like sweettarts or skittles... Jellys to a lesser degree... chocolate is fine. Nougat and nuts... But I am without a doubt a caramel guy.

Brach's Milkmaids or Royals are probably my all time favorite. I can eat em by the pound.

In the freezer for just a minute or two... crisp chocolate, warm peanut butter... with strong coffee. Excellent!

NOPE. There's something off in the ratio/size in comparison to candy corn. I like candy corn. All them candy pumpkins are for is throwing at people.

I am a black licorice fiend.

My kid eats his weight in these:


Ends up with sugar burns all over the roof of his mouth, but whatever.  He can't eat the majority of what you find in trick-or-treat bags due to a peanut allergy, and it seems like almost everything is 'made in a facility which also processes peanuts' these days.  I'll support his Smarties habit; it's cheaper than an Epi-pen.

I can happily eat my way into a sugar coma on Smarties... And I have tore up the roof of my mouth with em too... Though nowhere near as bad as Capn' Crunch.

I used to love the mini-sized candy bars, especially 3 Musketeers and Milky Way bars.  KitKat and M&Ms were OK too, Snickers less so... I don't like peanuts getting in the way of my chocolate.

When I find Good and Plenty I buy every box I can put my hands on  @roamer_1   Then enjoy every morsel slowly --- sugar coating first

You should try and get you some black licorice out of Holland... Salted. The very best. If you've got a Dutch community around there, it is worth seeking out.

Years ago, I worked in western Pennsylvania. During the holidays, a coal company would send out sheets of hard candy black licorice to its customers. The candy would come with a toy sledge hammer to break off chunks from the sheet. It was the most amazing licorice I ever had.

Yes, that'll do... Had something the like before... Very good- Not my fav though. I will have to write my sis and get the brand from her,  @Right_in_Virginia

The real thing is from the old country, is just little square logs, dusty looking with salt.
Had one similar that were cut to look like fishes. But they come to me wrapped tightly in saran wrap with no label. So I am pretty certain they are old school. Probably from one of my relatives over there.

For several years in the early 1980s, Halloween got a whole lot scarier. Parents in Dallas and across the country weren't looking out for ghosts or goblins — they were looking out for cyanide and razor blades hidden in Tootsie Rolls and Spree.

Their concern wasn't totally unfounded. In late September 1982, an unknown individual laced Tylenol pain relievers with potassium cyanide, resulting in the deaths of seven people in the Chicago area. Parents began to worry that candy could be tampered with in a similar way. Rumors and reports of painful foreign objects added to the anxiety.

Many cities across the country banned trick-or-treating in an attempt to protect children from potential injury. But in Dallas, police spokesman Ed Spencer told The News that he "didn't see how we could do that." Another spokesman, Bob Shaw, noted that "traditions die hard." ...
