Milley Says Ukrainians Using Land Mines 'Effectively,' Reopening Debate About Controversial Weapons

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley argued Thursday that land mines have been critical for Ukrainian forces' success against Russian armored vehicles.

Milley's comments at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing come as the Biden administration is reviewing the U.S. land mine policy after former President Donald Trump expanded the U.S. military's use of the controversial weapons in 2020.

"Land mines are being effectively used by the Ukrainian forces to shape the avenues of approach by Russian armored forces, which puts them into engagement areas and makes them vulnerable to the 60,000 anti-tank weapons systems that we're providing to the Ukrainians," Milley said.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
That is the purpose of mines, really, to shape the battlefield by providing deterrents to escape routes or viable approaches.

Unfortunately, those mines might not be taken up after the conflict, with detrimental effects on civilians and livestock.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

More detrimental than an attack by Russia?

That depends on whether the Russians prevail and use civilians to clear the minefields, or whether the Ukrainians prevail and use EOD teams.
