After Trump withdraws support of Brooks, will Alabama conservatives migrate toward Ron DeSantis in 2024?

Lou Campomenosi would never be confused with a “Never Trumper.”

As former longtime president of the Common Sense Campaign tea party, he’s organized rallies in Baldwin County to support the “Stop the Steal” movement before January 6, 2021. He is an unabashed supporter of Trump in past elections and remains concerned over what he believes was election fraud in 2020.

But Campomenosi is also a backer of U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and a candidate for the Senate in Alabama this spring.

So, when Trump removed his endorsement for Brooks on Wednesday, Campomenosi made a statement that was unheard of among diehard Trump supporters not long ago.

“DeSantis will get our vote if any Republican primary gets to that,” he said, referring to the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Trump shot himself in the foot.”

Indeed, the 2024 presidential prospects for DeSantis, a conservative darling whose national profile was elevated during the COVID-19 pandemic, is animating Republicans nationwide.

The same can be said in Alabama.

“I can think of a lot of people I know who are impressed with what he’s done in Florida and would love to see him run,” said Becky Gerritson, executive director of the conservative Alabama Eagle Forum.

Some political observers say that Trump’s withdrawal of his endorsement of Brooks could erode some his popularity in Alabama shortly before 2024 presidential politics heat up...............

Trump has proven himself to be a very poor judge of candidates.  Mo Brooks' Conservative creds are off the chart.  But Trump snubbed him last time in favor of McConnell's pick.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Agreed. Trump isn't the greatest at selecting people and this may hurt his chances in AL should he run in '24.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
If Trump wants the nomination, he needs to chill.

The only one that can hurt Trump right now is Trump.

  • Didn't vote for McCain Dole Romney Trump !
Mo Brooks is in the top 4 or 5 conservatives in the State, for Trump to do this actually is not surprising given his history of supporting some of the biggest RINOs numerous times in the past. Want Trumps endorsement, glue your lips to his butt or else.

Yep. And at this moment in time, if DeSantis decides to run for president, I can see no reason not to actively campaign and happily vote for him. He’s the gutsiest Republican out there.  By far.
