Showroom shock! Dealer jacks up truck’s MSRP 43% amid auto industry crisis

Sticker shock is fueling consumer anger in auto showrooms.

A New Jersey auto dealer is selling a new Ford Bronco for a staggering 43 percent above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, as inflation reaches historic levels and auto inventory shortages wreak havoc on consumer wallets.

“We are going to be like Cuba soon,” said one customer at All American Ford in Old Bridge, NJ. “No new cars and we’ll all be driving ’57 Chevys.”

A New York City man expressed his truckin’ outrage on social media this week after he found a 2021 Ford Bronco at the Old Bridge dealer with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $34,855 being sold instead for $49,855 – a “market adjustment” of $15,000.

The 43% up-charge was written by hand in black marker on the window decal.

Well, trying to sell, anyway. I certainly wouldn't pay it. If the price is ridiculous, why pay it?

Nicely done, Joe!
Chart: Prices of USED cars and trucks. Source: BLS
And dealers are adding $10-20,000 "market adjustments" onto the price of NEW cars.

BTW, the prices of new cars are NOT reflected in the CPI.

Didn't look at the article or the spefics enought to really understand if this was price gouging, but in the age of internet buying of vehicles, I'd say his chances of success are pretty small.

The pickup truck my brother-in-law ordered six months is still on a lot waiting for a chip.

My father-in-laws 1999 Chevy pickup just got hauled to the junk yard ... 22 years of winter road salt eroded it beyond repair.  My inlaws can't buy a new car because of insufficient inventory selection and high prices.  Their 2008 Buick is not long for this world.

If that 1991 Ford Escort Hatchback still runs and can pass inspection, this is the time to sell it.

A friend of mine said she was planning to purchase a late model used car. It turns out it was cheaper to buy an actual new car, so she did.
