ALBANY – Newly proposed congressional maps drawn by Democrats could cut New York’s current Republican delegation by half – eliminating at least one upstate seat and jeopardizing three others.

The Democratic-controlled state Legislature unveiled plans on Sunday to shrink the GOP’s eight seats to just four, according to a proposed redistricting map.

The new map eliminates the current upstate district held by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-Binghamton) to account for population loss, creating a new 22nd district effectively split between the seats held by retiring Rep. John Katko (R-Auburn) and Rep. Antonio Delgado (D-Kingston).

“We’re confident,” said the source, “If these maps pass, Claudia will run in the 23rd. Her family business is in Chenango.”

A source close to Tenney told The Post she will run for election in the newly configured 23rd district that retained portions of at least four of the eight counties she presently represents – Broome, Tioga, Cortland and Chenango.

She could also run in the new 24th district, which skew red, but the lines favor Rep. Chris Jacobs (R-Geneseo) and he’ll likely run for that seat, the source said.

NY State Democrats Go Big on Gerrymandering, Cut GOP Districts in Half

Wendell Husebø 31 Jan 2022

New York state Democrats on Sunday proposed a redistricting map that cuts the Republican delegation in  half.

As nationwide state redistricting will remain in place for ten years and shape national politics for decades, the New York state Democrats are making the best of the opportunity by reshaping districts to favor Democrats in 2022.

The map proposed Sunday will greatly help House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) retain control of the House and reduce Republicans’ ability to conduct oversight on the Biden administration.

The map specifically proposes to cut the eight GOP-held districts to four by eliminating one seat and drawing lines that jeopardize three others. The State of New York lost one congressional district due to people fleeing the Democrat-controlled state for red states, according to the 2020 census.

Those GOP districts at risk are currently held by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Rep. John Katko (R-NY), and Rep. Antonio Delgado (D-NY).

The New York state legislature will ultimately vote on the Democrats’ proposal, which must be passed by two-thirds of each chamber. This is expected to happen by early April at the latest.

New York Officially Adopts New Congressional Lines That Could Axe Half The GOP Delegation

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul late Thursday signed a new congressional map into law that could eliminate half of the state’s Republicans in the House.

The signing, reported by the Associated Press, comes just days after the state legislature advanced the map on near party lines. The map gives Democrats an advantage in 22 of the state’s 26 seats.

New York’s current congressional delegation includes 19 Democrats and eight Republicans. The state is slated to lose a seat for the upcoming decade due to its relatively slow population gain.
