FBI activity underway near Rep. Cuellar’s home in Laredo

The FBI is conducting what it described as “court-authorized” law enforcement activity at the Laredo home of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Although FBI spokesperson Roseanne Hughes did not identify what the agency is investigating, she did issue a statement acknowledging the activity. ...

“The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity,” the statement read. “The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

At Cuellar’s home, located in the 8200 block of Estate Drive, federal vehicles were seen with cases and other items taken from the congressman’s home as agents filed in and out of the residence Wednesday afternoon.

Federal authorities raided the house of U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar in Laredo, Texas, on Wednesday. Details of the raid remain unknown.

“The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity,” the FBI revealed in a prepared statement. “The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

Federal authorities did not reveal a motive for the raid. The raid was first reported on Wednesday afternoon by Valerie Gonzalez from The Monitor. According to The Monitor, Cuellar lives on the 8200 block of Estate Drive, which is near the corner with Windridge Drive.

Breitbart Texas contacted Cuellar’s Office who confirmed the investigation and added that “Congressman Cuellar will fully cooperate in any investigation. He is committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld,” a statement from Cuellar’s Press Secretary Dana Yougentob revealed.

Cuellar is one of the few Democratic congressmen who has been vocal about the crisis at the border and the lack of action by the Biden administration.

More than two dozen FBI agents descended on Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar’s Laredo, Texas home on Wednesday.

The FBI was also present at Cuellar’s campaign office in Laredo.

“Congressman Cuellar will fully cooperate in any investigation. He is committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld,” his office said.

The FBI refused to comment on the ongoing investigation.

Rep. Cuellar, a nine-term Texas Democrat lawmaker who represents an area along the US-Mexico border, has lashed out at both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for allowing illegal aliens to pour over the border.

“I’ve moved on from the vice president to say, ‘OK, let’s work with the ambassadors and let’s work with the State Department. Let’s work with the Homeland Secretary,'” Cuellar said before the holidays.

“I think that’s the way to address it, but I know that the media has put a lot of focus on the vice president, but with all due respect, she was given that title. I don’t think she’s, with all due respect, put the effort in there…We’ve got to look at other folks that have the expertise on that,” he added.

Webb County-Zapata County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said he is unaware of what prompted the FBI investigation. He said Cuellar is revered in the South Texas community and has proved to be accessible to local officials and community members.

Alaniz said he believes the timing of the FBI raid is “questionable” and worries it may adversely affect Cuellar’s reelection campaign.  ...

Texas’s 28th congressional district is the site of one of the most closely watched House races this cycle. The heavily Latino area, which covers a long stretch of the Lone Star State’s southern border, was traditionally a reliably blue voting bloc. Its Democratic incumbent, Henry Cuellar, has represented the district in Congress since 2005. But as South Texas has shifted rightward, Cuellar’s political future looks increasingly uncertain. Like many Texas border communities, the 95 percent Latino electorate in Webb County — the largest county in South Texas, where Cuellar’s home of Laredo is situated — shifted toward Republicans by double-digit margins from 2016 to 2020. This cycle, Cook Political Report gives TX-28 a three-point Democratic advantage — far from safe-blue in a red-wave year.

Cuellar is a skilled retail politician and has tried to remain in step with his district’s relatively conservative voter base by distancing himself from the national Democratic Party’s leftward lurch. He is currently ranked as the most conservative Democrat in the U.S. House and was the only Democrat in the lower chamber to vote against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would have effectively legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy nationwide. While Cuellar over-performed Biden’s showing in TX-28 by a whopping 15 points in 2020, his positioning has also come at a cost: The congressman is a frequent target of progressive ire, and he only narrowly survived a primary challenge from his left earlier this year.

At the same time, he’s been trailed by controversies surrounding allegations of personal corruption. This January, Cuellar’s Laredo home and campaign headquarters were the subject of an FBI raid, purportedly as part of a “court-authorized law enforcement activity” related to an investigation of the lawmaker’s links to the nation of Azerbaijan.  ...

But it isn’t the congressman’s only run-in with controversy: One less-scrutinized incident involved contributions from the family of a conduit for Los Zetas, the notoriously brutal Mexican criminal syndicate described by U.S. officials as “the most technologically advanced, sophisticated and dangerous cartel operating in Mexico.”  ...
