Legendary Platters singer Sonny Turner dies at 82

Sonny Turner was a master showman who recited the Platters’ hits with classic eloquence.

“My father had the gift of singing songs as if he were singing directly to you,” Turner’s daughter Kyle Tolliver-Jordan said Friday morning. “The lyrics in those classic songs were like poetry.”

The last link to the legendary R&B vocal group the Platters to headline in Las Vegas, Sonny Turner died Thursday at his daughter’s home in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. He was 82.

Fred Parris, “In the Still of the Night” Songwriter and Five Satins Frontman, Dies at 85

Fred Parris, frontman for The Five Satins, the doo-wop group whose smash 1956 ballad “In the Still of the Night” became an enduring standard and was prominently used in movies including Dirty Dancing and The Irishman, died Thursday after a brief illness. He was 85.

“I never expected it to have so much of an impact,” Parris told the New Haven Register in 2014. “I didn’t know if they were going to listen to it 15 minutes later, let alone 50 years.”

My FIL was very fortunate, talented and capable he trained pilots for the B-17 and when I say fortunate it's because he was both well liked and an excellent instructor so that he spent his enlistment here in the states. Still I think that came back to bite him, one flight they were out in New Mexico when they saw a huge flash in the sky and flew over to look. I still think flying threw the radiation from that blast is what brought on the cancers that ended his life.

Meat Loaf, the larger-than-life singer and actor whose 1977 album “Bat Out of Hell” was one of the best-selling albums of all time, died on Thursday. He was 74.

His death was announced on his official Facebook page. The statement said the musician’s wife was by his side and his friends had been with him in his final 24 hours. A cause of death was not given.

Meat Loaf, who was born Marvin Lee Aday on Sept. 27, 1947, had a career that few could match. In six decades, he sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, the statement said, and appeared in movies such as “Fight Club,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Wayne’s World.”

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man,” the statement said. “We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time.”

I do not know why I feel gutted by this. Yes, I had two of his records. Yes, I saw Rocky Horror at least ten times when  I was a teen.
Yes, I thought he made Jim Steinman’s lyrics  sparkle and shine, to the point I could get tears in my eyes.

Meat Loaf said a few months ago when Jim Steinman passed: "We didn't know each other... we WERE each other."

As tumultuous as their bond was over the years, it was a pretty strong one, and you have to believe that it had an impact. Well, that, and being in his mid-70s and morbidly obese his whole life.

Iconic comedian Louie Anderson has died, after a battle with blood cancer ... TMZ has learned.

As we previously reported, Anderson had been battling this aggressive cancer. And, while it's not clear when he was diagnosed, the "Coming to America" star was recently being treated for Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a Vegas hospital.

Unfortunately, he lost that battle Friday morning ... according to his publicist.

Throughout his career of over 30 years, the 3-time Emmy Award winner became known as one of America's most beloved comics ... He was named “One of 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time” by Comedy Central.

I guess the question should have been "how many under 30 know of the wars he fought in?"

Sure, those of us who have been around 50 years know, after all we mostly had relatives or friends who fought in those wars, if we did not do so ourselves, and for those in the services that knowledge is there as a matter of course.

But as the percentage of youth who enter the service becomes smaller, and movies like "Pork Chop Hill" fade into the back rows on streaming channels, how many who haven't served know of the battles from the Pusan Pocket to the Yalu and back to the current DMZ before the cease fire? How many could point out which end of Vietnam had I Corps or the Delta, or where the Parrots Beak is?
I hope I am wrong, but it seems that despite a lot of attempts to make the general population aware of the sweat and sacrifice of even modern day veterans, the usual suspects in the media tend to downplay that, especially in the face of situations like Biden's Afghanistan debacle, because any failure involved almost always belongs on the doorstep of Democrat politicians.

I do. The Parrots Beak is a mountain top that IIRC,is along the Laotian/Cambodian borders that overlooks the Ho Chi  Mihn Trail. Been inserted all around it when I was still running recon. The natives were NOT friendly.

Rock legend Meat Loaf was “seriously ill” with COVID-19 just days before his death Thursday, according to a report.

Sources told TMZ that the 74-year-old “Bat Out of Hell” star was due to attend a business dinner earlier this week for a show he is working on based on his classic hit, “I’d Do Anything for Love.”

But he canceled because he was seriously ill with COVID-19, with his condition soon becoming critical, the outlet’s sources said.

It was not clear if he had been vaccinated. Reps for the star did not immediately return requests for comment early Friday.

No cause of death was given in the announcement of his death on his official Facebook page.
