Of note: The 4 cases of new variant identified in Botswana were incidentally detected in well people tested before air travel, and South African Medical Association chief said - so far - symptoms seen are "mostly mild symptoms, and we haven’t seen a spike in hospital admissions."

Let’s all panic and weep over four people with a mild cold in Botswana

This might be the best thing to happen to this pandemic. The rumors are that this virus has mutated so much from COVID that PCR can't recognize it in a lot of cases. Remember, COVID's closest relative is βCov-OC43—the second-leading cause of the common cold. If the two combined to form a more virulent, but far less deadly, virus, that would be what many people predicted would be the endgame to begin with. Pandemics usually don't last more than two to three years or so.
The lack of a spike in hospitalizations coupled with its ability to crowd out Delta might be the saving grace that actually ends the pandemic as we know it.
