Starting with the fact that there are few enough places to carve out a grade across the Rockies, Europeans tend to be in more concentrated urban environs. It would take one hell of a lot of track laid to get back and forth from small town to small town in say, ND or Wyoming, and getting all those different rail lines to pay for themselves would simply not work. Part of that is because the work out this way is out in the boonies, miles, sometimes from the nearest paved road, and it would be the same with rail. You aren't getting rid of the vehicles without getting rid of the people, and if you do that, there won't be anyone to farm, ranch, or drill oil wells. That, my friend is the basic part of the proverbial economic food chain. No food, no fuel, and the big cities can starve, shivering in the dark, and their trains won't be going anywhere, either.

Well,they have already revived massive unemployment,and we are well on our way to another Depression. This one is going to be worse,too. Most people back in the 20's and 30's owned their own homes free and clear,and that is about as rare as hens teeth these days because new homes are so expensive you damn near have to be a millionaire to own one outright.

Of course,Clever Joe is working on a plan to make them cheap that involved flooding the market with foreclosed homes that the banks will try to be selling for a dime on the dollar.

Urbanite delusion.  In the portions of the country where we have similar population densities to Western Europe and Japan, we generally already have reasonably good rail service of the sort Biden is used to between Delaware and DC.  Once you get out here in the Great Plains or into the Intermountain West, the rural South, or even the less populated parts of Pennsylvania, the notion that the automobile can be replaced with rail service is sheer fantasy.

True dat. Wal-Mart will never admit it,but they closed a HUGE store in town about 5 years ago that is STILL vacant because it was too close to publick housing,and the ghetto rats where stealing and vandalizing customers cars,assaulting women in the parking lot,and hanging out in the mall speaking/shouting sexual obscenities to white women and girls. If they called the cops,the thugs would just scoot back to publik housing,and wait until things settled down again and then go back.

So they literally moved out of town and opened a new Super Center that is doing a booming business because there are no busses them,and it's too far for the ghetto rats to bicycle. Besides,it is out in the country,and a bicycle makes  lousy getaway vehicle when there are no streets or houses to hide behind.

True story. I was in a phone store buying my first cell phone several years ago,and there was a black kid in there who was maybe 14,and he had his granny with him to sign the contract because he was too young. When it came time to pay for everything,the kid whips a roll of bills out of his pocket and peels off a couple of hundreds to pay for it all.

Now,HOW do you suspect a 14 year old kid living with his granny could come up with that kind of money?

Hold on now... We DO have roads, you know... Seven grand passes over the Rockies in Montana alone... Marias, Homestake, Logan, Pipestone, Rogers, MacDonald and Elk Park... And many others that are not interstate or state highways.

I like horseback as much as anybody, and there are places that can only be accessed by foot and horse... But between offroad vehicles and roughly 'automobiles', nothing is more ubiquitous to travel anywhere in the country. To include large portions of the Rockies.

When I lived 40 years ago in the UK, there were lots of cars and I was paying over $4 per gal.

There will still be lots of cars at $10/gal on the roads, including mine.

We will just be more judicious.

There are not now, nor will there ever be, trains running from where I am to where I want or need to go.

Even in the rail heydays where nearly every town was connected to or sprung up around the nearby railroad, it was often still to be 5+ miles by horse and buggy to get there - not a short trip by that measure.

Rail never was what the socialist planners pipe dream in their little confabs. Even in town it might be a mile or more to the station these days.

It's just another method for govt control.
