Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's (R) job performance rating has fallen sharply, according to a new poll that shows a majority of Texans now disapprove of him.

Forty-five percent of Texans approve of Abbott's performance as governor, while 54 percent disapprove, according to the survey from The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler.

Abbott's approval rating was at 59 percent prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 60,000 people in the state, The Dallas Morning News noted.

These fatalities, coupled with Abbott's "right turn" and stance on hot-button issues such as abortion, the border wall, guns and COVID-19-related mandates, may have contributed to his falling ratings, according to the newspaper.

Can we draft DeSantis for the GOP nomination as our governor instead?

I was going to say, "What has Abbot done that would bring on a drop in Texans' approval?"

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

It's more about what he hasn't done but there is plenty that he has which is being highly criticized beginning with the completely unnecessary COVID shutdowns.

When you find the time, watch the Huffines interview I posted above.

We’d be happy to take Abbott off your hands, Texas. At least he’s not a shill for Bill Gates, like my governor is.

Abbot's not perfect, but good enough for me.  My biggest concern is that we may be creating some unneecssary infighting that might hurt us badly in the general election.  Too me, not worth the chance.  And as far as I am concerned the carpetbagger Col. West can go find a blue state to become Guv that might be able to flip

+1

I'll be voting for Don Huffines in the primary next year.  If Abbott wins that (very likely) I'll support him in the general.

The guy is a twit, but I reckon his chances are as good as anyone else's, and perhaps better.

He almost knocked out Ted Cruz, after all. That is no mean feat.
Abbott is a FAR weaker opponent.

Perhaps... just perhaps... if Abbott does something really pro-active and "all but revolutionary" about the border situation, he may win back the public.
But this poll could be a fire bell in the night for Texas Republicans...
