Blinken, Austin to visit Persian Gulf to reassure US ‘partners’ after Afghanistan debacle
September 5, 2021 | Chris Donaldson
The fallout from President Joe Biden’s Afghanistan catastrophe continues to reverberate with America’s allies having legitimate concerns about the administration’s commitment to their security, particularly in the volatile Middle East that is an incubator for terrorism.
Two of the architects of the worst foreign policy debacle in decades will be taking their show on the road this week as they travel to the Gulf region to meet with leaders and representatives, as they seek to engage in damage control by reassuring them that the U.S. isn’t going to cut and run after Biden’s surrender to the radical Islamic Taliban.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will begin his trip by thanking the government of Qatar for allowing the use of the al-Udeid air base to assist with the evacuation, and will also visit Bahrain where he will speak with Marines who served at Kabul’s main airport during the frantic operation to get American citizens and Afghan allies out of the country before the beginning of the Taliban’s reign of terror, the Associated Press reported.
