@mountaineer If you DO tell,you will be telling a lie. It wasn't illegal for citizens to own cannons back then,and it's STILL not illegal for citizens to own weapons of mass destruction today. Just a few years ago an unidentified rich man on the left coast (can YOU say "Spielberg"?) bought a freaking SS-20 Soviet ICBM,complete with the truck hauls and fires them from one of the former eastern block satellite nations of the USSR.
This made the news when it hit port in Portland,IIRC,and customs discovered there were several nuclear warheads still inside the nose cone of the damn thing. Needless to say they were removed before the SS-20 was allowed to be delivered.
People don't buy crap like that unless they are bored zillionaires because really,what the HELL are you going to do with it after you get it?
And it was a rare shipowner prior to the 1900's that didn't set sail with several cannons to protect them from pirates.
