House Republicans protest more books on Navy reading list
A Navy official said exposure to varied viewpoints improves sailors' critical thinking skills
By Audrey Conklin | Fox News

Three House Republicans are protesting the inclusion of several books on the Navy's 2021 reading list.

Republican Reps. Doug Lamborn of Colorado and Vicky Hartzler of Missouri on Thursday evening sent a letter to Adm. Michael Gilday expressing concern about the inclusion of the following books on the Chief of Naval Operations Professional Reading Program (CNO-PRP) reading list: Ibram X. Kendi's "How to be an Antiracist," Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow" and Jason Pierceson's "Sexual Minorities and Politics."

"All three books reinforce the view that America is a confederation of identity categories of the oppressed and their oppressors rather than a common homeland of individual citizens who are united by common purposes and fidelity to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and codified in the Constitution," Lamborn and Hartzler wrote to Gilday.

Woke Books Have No Place in U.S. Navy Training

From soft-drink companies instructing their employees to be less white, to the cancellation of children’s books that, until two minutes ago, were completely benign fixtures in the libraries of many, a powerful segment of the American public seems intent on sending every inch of public life careening over a cliff’s edge in the ill-begotten quest to please the most extreme elements of the Left. Over the past several weeks, it has become quite apparent that the United States Navy is no exception to the relentless onslaught of “woke” politicking.

On February 23, the chief of naval operations Admiral Michael Gilday released an updated version of the Navy’s Professional Reading Program. The program, a long-standing tradition that curates suggested readings for all members of the Navy, has a stated aim of educating and training the sailors that compose this branch of the Armed Forces. According to the Navy’s official website on this program, Admiral Gilday believes that in order to “outthink our competitors, we must study and apply lessons we’ve learned from the past.” He further holds that “one of the very best ways to do that is to foster an environment where every Sailor deepens their level of understanding and learning.” Many of the 48 books listed in the newly released reading checklist cover topics relevant to the Navy’s overall mission of becoming a more lethal fighting force: naval strategy, deep-dives into future world superpowers, leadership development, technology changes in the domain of warfighting, etc.

Extremist, Anti-Constitutional Propaganda Has No Place in Navy

Rep. Jim Banks / @RepJimBanks / March 16, 2021

Rep. Jim Banks, a Republican, represents Indiana's 3rd Congressional District. He is the chairman of the Republican Study Committee and serves on the Armed Services; Veterans' Affairs; and Education and Labor committees.

When I joined the U.S. Navy reserves in 2012, I swore an oath to “bear true faith and allegiance” to the U.S. Constitution.

Since then, I’ve met sailors from all across America, and nearly all of them come from backgrounds very different from mine. The Navy is a truly diverse organization, so it’s natural that I’ve had my fair share of disagreements with sailors on questions of politics and faith—but I’ve never met one who doesn’t take that oath as seriously as I do.

That’s why I was horrified to see a book on the Navy chief of operations’ reading list that directly contradicts the Navy’s oath. Ibram X. Kendi’s “How to Be an Antiracist” is extremist, anti-American, and divisive, and should not be officially promoted by any part of our government.

Identity Politics and Critical Race Theory Have No Place in US Military

Identity Politics and Critical Race Theory Have No Place in US Military

Dakota Wood / March 29, 2021

Sen. Tom Cotton, rightly angered that the Department of Defense is moving to indoctrinate U.S. military personnel in divisive critical race theory, has introduced a bill that would forbid it.

Like colleagues in the House who sent letters to Adm. Mike Gilday, the chief of naval operations, expressing severe disapproval of the Navy’s decision to include books on critical race theory and other aspects of identity politics on professional reading lists, Cotton, R-Ark., and a former soldier, demonstrated he understands the corrosive effect that such teachings would have on the U.S military.

In 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. expressed his dream that one day people “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” It is a powerful message consistently referenced by everyone who seeks true equality in diverse populations.
