People given the vaccine as part of the Phase I trial, the first step in the research and development process before U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, experienced minimal side effects, the researchers said.
A Phase 2 trial of the vaccine is already underway, according to its manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson-Janssen.
In plain English, Phase 1 usually involves 50-100 participants, and the goals are to find the effective safe (and minimum-moderate side effects) dose. Phase 2 is usually several hundred participants with a goal of confirming the effectiveness. If this vaccine is successful, I'd guess that conclusion will be reached 12-18 months from now.
