Senate passes amendment to stop stimulus checks from going to illegal aliens
February 5, 2021 | Vivek SaxenaDespite holding a minority position in the legislative body, Senate Republicans managed on Thursday to pass an amendment to prohibit the federal government from doling out coronavirus stimulus payments to illegal aliens.
This stunning victory was only possible thanks to the support of eight Democrats who crossed the aisle to help Republicans protect the American people’s tax money.
The amendment was introduced by Republican Sens. Tom Cotton and Todd Young earlier Thursday to prevent a precedent being established of the government giving money to those who’ve flagrantly violated America’s immigration laws.
“The Biden administration shouldn’t reward illegal immigrants for breaking our laws by giving them checks. Instead of courting foreigners with U.S. taxpayer funds, President Biden should use that money to aid American schools, businesses, and families,†Cotton said in a statement when he introduced the amendment.
“Economic Impact Payments were intended to provide a lifeline to Americans struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus pandemic. They were not intended for people who are in our country illegally. Our amendment would ensure that people who break our immigration laws aren’t receiving taxpayer-funded handouts,†Young added.
