Friday 10am update

Delta is now moving due north at about  13 mph, about 100+ miles south of Sabine Pass.  Winds have decreased to 115 mph, and the NHC expects the winds to drop another 5-10 mph before making landfall east of Cameron late this afternoon or this evening.  Hurricane Warnings are still in effect from High Island to Morgan City.  Tropical Storm Warnings extend west to about Freeport, and East to the Pearl River (La/MS border),  In past 24 hours the biggest change in dynamics is that the size of the storm (wind and convection) is significantly larger, about double.  Which is probably some of the reasoning of the real estate covered on these watches/ warnings.  Fortunately the NHC has this storm zipping along even after landfall, so at least, I don't expect any extreme rain events with it.  Although the charts do show some 10" expectations from S. Louisana coast through central Louisiana.

Overall landfall, if you want the bullseye, looks to be in eastern Cameron Parish, which fortunately is pretty much unpopulated.
More than anything, our thoughts are with the folks in SW Louisana.  A 6 week two punch of both Laura and Delta is a terrible tragedy for them.

And one last point....  Tropical Storm force winds are now reaching the SE Texas and SW Louisana coasts.

Not wanting to get too  picky but far SE Texas is going to get a heck of a lot more impact than Mississippi

Yes, good luck to POTUS.  Quite an honor, I might add.

As you might notice on this IR radar shot, notice the SW to NE heavy convection stream on the north end of the storm.  That is a good indication that the NNE to NE bend in overall direction is imminent......

Wow, last hour and half showed a westward wobble.  West side of cone (IMO )seems more vunerable, and storm looks to be taking almost the same path as Laura.  Of course this thing while weakening could wobble back east.  We will see.

Hurricane Delta leaves hundreds of thousands without power as it pummels parts of Louisiana and Texas

With fierce sideways rain pelting their homes and lashing winds tearing at their roofs — or the tarps covering the holes in the roofs from a previous storm — hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana and southeast Texas waited out the fury of Hurricane Delta in the dark on Friday night.

Power was out in more than 387,000 homes and businesses, according to tracking website poweroutage.us, as the Category 2 storm roared ashore with winds approaching 100 mph. The storm has since weakened to a Category 1 as it moved inland.

Conditions along the coast had deteriorated rapidly as the storm approached and forecasters said the storm will weaken rapidly as it moves inland. But first, residents will have to deal with several hours of dangerous conditions, including life-threatening storm surge, said CNN meteorologist Tom Sater.

The center of Delta made landfall a little more than 10 miles from where deadly Hurricane Laura slammed into the coast in August. While Delta is not as powerful as Laura — which left much damage that still hasn’t been fixed — it does have a broader wind field, Sater said.

Post storm observations:

1. First Kudos to the NHC.  Forecasting was extremely accurate.  Final 5 days of track were almost spot on with forecasts.
2. Very strange storm in some respects.  Western semicircle of storm was much much stronger than expected.  In fact, first 100 mph gust occured at Sabine Pass.  Much of SE Texas of taken by surprise by the high winds and widespead power outages.  Beaumont, southward especially.
3. Terrible Luck- Landfall was between Cameron and Creole, and about 10 miles east of Laura's.  There is a triangular rectangle from Cameron Parish to just north of Lake Charles that saw 100+ mph sustained winds twice in a 6 week period.
4.  Adding to Comment 1-  I have never seen the models remain that clustered, and deviate so minorly in any 5 day period all of my  years of Hurricane watching.
5. Best news of all?  As far as I know, no fatalites were or have been reported.
6. Trending-  As I have stated in most Hurricane Threads, as we progress during the fall, expect any and all storms to follow the "curve" in response to fronts and troughs.  Texas' 170 year streak of not having a major hurricane eye landfall took a close call this time.  Our poor folks in La, need about another week or two to be in the clear for what has been an awful season.
7. Right now we have a lull in the action.  Only one equitorial Cape Verde Wave that has a 20% chance for development within the next week.  We need the break.

Cut/Paste from NWS report of maximum winds.  Kind getting underreported in this thing, is some of the strongest winds (as I earlier reported) were in Texas.  In fact the ONLY 100 mph sustained wind observation was in Texas....   Texas Point, near Sabine Pass.
