Coyotes in the Eastern states are much larger than the scrawny Mutts we have running around here in AZ. Out here, the predator to watch is the Mountain Lion.
Coyotes are hunted here for fur, so they tend to avoid humans. The ones that don't serve as an example (posthumously) to the rest. There have been a couple of folks who saw what they were fairly sure were wolves.
We have cougar in the badlands and the Missouri breaks, sometimes very close to town, and in the backwater willows. It pays to have a dog with, and the means to dispatch one, and avoid overhangs and such. They have spread considerably since I arrived in ND 42 years ago.
Rattlesnakes here are south of the Missouri, fairly rare north of the river. The Ice Age pushed them to the other side.
No matter where you are in the boonies, it pays to pay attention and be tuned in to what's going on around you.
