Lack of prominent third-party candidates could benefit Biden more than Trump

The lack of prominent third-party presidential candidates in the 2020 election is simplifying the presidential choice for voters this year, and Joe Biden is more likely to benefit from that dynamic than President Trump.

Four years ago, voters who disliked both Trump and Hillary Clinton voted in waves for third-party alternatives. In some states, they were thought to be a spoiler for Clinton, because the minor candidates received more votes than the margin between Trump and Clinton in key swing states.

In Michigan, for instance, Trump won the state by a razor-thin margin of 10,704 votes more than Clinton. The Libertarian Party nominee, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, received 172,136 votes in the state, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein got 51,463 votes.

Johnson and Stein had more political experience and higher profiles than this year’s nominees for the parties.
