Captain Crozier’s E-mail

The text of the e-mail was much better than the text of the attached memo.
    Issues and questions remain.

Discussion:

In a previous article, the memo that Captain Brett Crozier, former commanding officer of USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, wrote, requesting assistance for his crew, was critically analyzed.   At the time, that was the only documentary evidence that existed, and the analysis was limited to the memo and did not address how it was transmitted or to whom.  Now, the cover e-mail has come to light (more on that later) and raises some interesting questions, issues and concerns.[ii]

Central argument versus the cover letter

The initial reporting by the media on Captain Crozier’s e-mail focused almost exclusively on the attached memo, and not the content of the e-mail itself.[iii]  In fact, the text of the e-mail forms the central argument, with the attached memo – which is not even referred to in the e-mail – being more in the nature of supporting reference material.  The positive aspects of CAPT Crozier’s e-mail include summarizing the problem, focusing on the mission, defining a solution, and taking personal responsibility for his actions.  The attached memo adds nothing positive to the arguments he makes in the text of the e-mail and has an accusatory tone and inflammatory comments that are missing from the e-mail.
