That's very interesting News we can Use!  Thanks!

You're most welcome!

I found it helpful regarding being outside vs inside and thought the actual spread in a restaurant was fascinating.

Of course I always knew as a singer that I spit alot, but it was good to know to avoid spitting in an enclosed space.   wink777

They say there was social distancing, but knowing how small a volleyball court is, it would have been practically impossible, with that many people in such a small space, to do so properly. A volleyball court holds 12 players, six on each side, and each one is separated by almost exactly six feet of space in each direction. So five times that many people, plus room for the piano and conductor, would mean there could not have been anywhere near the recommended distance.

The thing is that they THOUGHT they were being safe and had no idea one of them was infected (because a huge percentage of carriers have no symptoms).

They could have cancelled that rehearsal, but they didn't and two people died.   **nononono*

It's a shame.

And a cautionary tale to those who return to life as normal without being as careful as they need to be to prevent this kind of tragedy.

For me it was helpful to know that indoor spaces are much more dangerous (though not surprising).  The church we attend is going to start meeting in early June, but they will be meeting outside in the parking lot, which based on this information is a good idea.

Churches in Ohio have never been shut down, but most pastors here have not met together in large worship services because of concern for their congregations.  However, I don't think the Church has ever been more active than it is now, in spite of, or perhaps because of the creative ways needed to keep their ministries and worship going in this crisis.

WTH?????

HOW is he in a position to make that claim, when it can ONLY be made a couple of weeks after the peak infection level has passed, and is determined to have passed by the lower number of new cases?

Whoever misspoke THAT brain fart needs to be fired.

They are wildly guessing.  Trying to keep panic stoked alone us.

They've been wildly guessing all along.

Avoiding Risks During Reopening

Fascinating study of how the Coronavirus has spread (factually) and how to avoid the risks of being in the same situation.  Remembering that many, many people are asymptomatic (and in these particular cases were not showing any signs of the disease), it's good to know what situations to avoid, and which are less risky.

For example, being in an enclosed indoor space (even with social distancing) is much riskier than being together outside.

The article lists some risky situations based on where the disease actually spread.  Especially interesting to me was the tragic choir rehearsal in Washington, where precautions were taken to keep people safe, yet 45 of 60 people in the choir got sick and two died....

Good reason for churches NOT to have choir practice.  The infected person was asymptomatic and precautions were taken and yet.....

The restaurant example from China is particularly revealing because some people near the (asymptomatic) infected person did not get sick because of the air flow, but many others did.... (diagram in article)

It's critical that we continue to open up the economy, but it's also important that we understand how to keep as safe as possible.

For those interested, it's a good read.

Don't go outside.  you might get skin cancer!  Do walk through a cross walk.  You might get hit by a car.

Life is full of risks.  You take risks getting in the shower every day.  Does the mean we we should refrain from bathing because of the fall risk?

This paranoid delusion that has beset people because of this particular virus when there are far deadlier ones out there is the dumbest most head scratching thing I've ever seen.

And the way it's turned rational...thinking people...into quivering piles of goo is tragic.

You DON'T forcibly quarantine healthy people the way they have been done with the Wuhan Flu.

It's not healthy it doesn't build up ANY immunity to this virus and there's no proof it stops or "flatten's the curve" of the virus.

And the people who ignore the research and the data that supports this and instead help to spread the panic porn that this is the worst thing to happen to the planet since the meteor that killed the dinosaurs are not serious thinking people.

I'm still "normally rational".  You're the one that's lost your ever loving mind during this virus.

As the CDC and other public health agencies know, quarantine by itself may delay the spread of an infectious disease, but it cannot prevent or end any disease outbreak. It has not succeeded in the past and is ill-suited to the realities of the contemporary world.

A better way to fight infectious disease outbreaks is by creating a resilient population that is more likely to withstand potential epidemics. As my colleague Michael Ulrich and I wrote in the SMU Law Review in 2018, “Populations with good nutrition, high literacy rates, adequate income, and access to appropriate medical care, social services, and sources of reliable information are better prepared to understand the meaning of an outbreak and what to do in response.” They are also less likely to suffer severe illness if the infection spreads to them.

Even in a reasonably resilient population like the United States, limiting the spread of a novel pathogen depends on public trust in government recommendations. But trust goes both ways. Government must also trust people to follow reasonable recommendations. And it can do that if its recommendations are reasonable and credible and people have the means to voluntarily comply with them.

Tybee Island’s beaches fully open without restrictions, parking rates increased

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Thursday was the first day all Georgia beaches were open without certain restrictions. The Georgia Department of Natural Resource’s order banned some items like chairs and umbrellas.

The beaches are fully re-opened on Tybee Island, but if you paid to park, you may have noticed the rates went up seemingly over night.

https://www.wtoc.com/2020/05/07/tybee-islands-beaches-fully-open-without-restrictions-parking-rates-increased/

Georgia is returning to normal.  Tybee Island raised parking fees to make up for lost revenue because of the closing.  Yet it was the mayor of Tybee Island who was badmouthing the Governor for ending the shut down.

@mystery-ak
@Cyber Liberty,

You said about an N95 mask,
"LOL!  The gal in the picture isn't wearing it properly either!!  See that little metal band over the nose?  That's supposed to be pressed down to conform to the shape of the nose.  She didn't press it down."
_____________
Not sure I have said this here, being an EMT, before this virus hit, I already had a box of 20 N95 masks, 50 surgical masks with eye guard, and 25 face shields.

Had to go to orthopedic surgeon last week and when he came in the room, he said, "You have on an N-95!"  Told him I have a box and he was amazed.  All these masks were dirt cheap when I bought them, but now, the N95s are like gold with the surgical masks being like silver.

The surgical masks which look like the light blue folding ones, are to prevent coughs or sneezing from the operating surgeon from getting on the patient.  They will prevent your nose/mouth secretions getting on someone else if the person is 6 feet away, but won't keep theirs from getting on you if they are not wearing a mask.  In actuality, only an N95 will keep you safe and you need a eye guard; your regular glasses help.  If you don't wear glasses, you can buy the eye guard that looks like glasses and those shield all around the eye.

I don't go anywhere except to a doc when I have to.  Our church is having service inside the church with limited people of 200 allowed and sitting 6 feet apart.  Due to my age, I don't go as I don't want to take a chance of my children being without their mother; the risk is too great.  The church bulletin says people over 60 should not go.  My 86 is way over that number.

I watch the church service on their facebook page in real time. I see my friends when they come forward for communion.

Are you going to church or is anyone who reads this going to church?  How much are you getting out of your house?  Anyone?

@Victoria33 I'm out of the house every day. I saw the oil crash coming, and actually had another job just before I was officially laid off, now working directing traffic for a road crew. The pay isn't bad (about 40% of what I was making in the patch), I don't have to fool with unemployment, I get lots of sunshine and more fresh air than I need some days (40MPH+ winds today). So, I'm out every day.

I have not made it to church, and do Mass on TV.
Enclosed spaces with high density crowds are not for me, never have been, and now I have an excuse.

I have everything from 'spit masks' to a few n-95s, to a pair of half face and 1 full face cartridge type respirator, tyveks, booties, gloves, nitrile gauntlets, etc. I keep at the house. On occasion I have worked with hazardous materials, and diesel aerosols are not uncommon around shale shakers on rigs using oil based drilling fluids.

There is no supply shortage here among first responders nor hospitals, so I am sitting on them, so to speak. I have work to do in the crawlspace area of my home (under an enclosed porch),  and I have the equipment to ward off most anything nasty under there. There's no telling what's in that 100 year old accumulation in that area, almost surely some mold spores, and my lungs do not tolerate mold well at all.

I don't wear masks at work, just hi-vis and ordinary safety gear, and the people I deal with are mostly distanced by virtue of our respective positions on the crew, and others by their vehicles.

All that aside, anecdote time.

A lot of the people I have spoken with (not a valid survey for scientific purposes) report having had a low grade fever and flu like symptoms in late January through February. This was accompanied by a dry cough, some shortness of breath, and the whole works finally breaking up and being coughed out in a couple of weeks.
I had the same in late Feb., and blamed it on congestion in response to brief exposure to the diesel droplets in the air up on the shale shaker. Slow down, breathe more when you're back in fresher air, and eventually cough up the gunk. (Oxygen vs exertion level, find a balance.) Most simply kept working (in the oil industry, you usually work if you can).
We also had people coming and going from all over the country to do their particular specialized tasks, in fact, the geology/geosteering crew was unusually composed of 'locals' all living within 120 miles of the rig.
People working on other rigs reported similar experiences, and many came to the conclusion we've already had it.
I can't say there are any antibody test results to verify that, and anyone who is still working isn't going to go get tested for fear of losing their job or paycheck over something that's already over in their minds.

Information has surfaced that the presence of the virus in Wuhan and vicinity may have been felt as early as November or even late October, and that with completely unhindered travel in and out of the region, the virus may have spread farther and longer than previously believed. (As early in the game as POTUS shut down flights, it may have been too late because the Chinese authorities were not talking.) Connections would be made by people traveling to and from their homes and wellsites who had been exposed at home and brought it to the region. Mostly, testing in this state has focused on people who have presented with symptoms, so the presence of asymptomatic and mild cases may remain hidden.

I don't wear masks in town, I do mind the distance recommendations for the most part, and respect others' apparent desires to reduce contact as expressed by them wearing masks (which protect us from them, but not so much vice versa).

I do most of the shopping, something I have never minded because for me it's just supply procurement, best stuff for the best price, and I am resistant to end cap impulse buys, so I can get out of say, WalMart with the items on my list and only one or two more which were overlooked, but not a lot else. I'm a mite faster than my wife, too, and she hates shopping for the most part.
So I have been in five major stores in the area, four auto parts houses (working on the 'fleet'), and visited with a few friends outside of work. We also have a constant stream in and out of friends of my grandson and great granddaughter who live with us.

There are currently 6 active cases in the entire county, three of which are linked to an extended care facility, so odds of exposure (if I haven't already had the bug) are low. With that in mind, and (thank God) so far blessed with an absence of 'underlying conditions', I really am not living much different than before, except for the change in employment (a product of oil prices which was happening even before COVID-19's influence was felt on that market), and not being able to take my wife out to lunch at our favorite cafe.

I view my personal risk as very low.

I understand that every person has to identify which risk factors apply to them and each should act accordingly.
If you are at risk, this is no joke and not to be trifled with.

Stay healthy.

Are you going to church or is anyone who reads this going to church?  How much are you getting out of your house?  Anyone?
I am a worship leader and I have been recording my hymns from home, something that has been a huge hit. Churches in New York are under the "no gatherings of any size for any reason" mandate, though it seems the state realizes they can't legally enforce it. They recommend no more than 10 in the sanctuary to record the service, but drive-ins are explicitly allowed. My church is still recording their services; if it were up to them (even though it's an over-60 congregation for the most part and some have health problems) they'd be reopened now, but they'd rather not risk it yet. Getting guidance from the state for churches (especially smaller ones like ours) has been very difficult.

I'm actually out of my house a lot, but at the same time I am also away from people as much as possible. I've been doing a LOT of walking—up to 10 miles a day at the beginning, just because I was so anxious (and I wanted to lose some weight anyway so that was a convenient way to do it). I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where there are very few cases so I can still go out to the grocery store or convenience store to grab a snack or a drink—certainly something I wouldn't be comfortable doing if I were in, for example, New York City. Grocery store trips happen about twice a month. I try to go when the stores are the least crowded.

@Victoria33

I am out most every day just like normal, just not going to town very much. Did go to church, I guess it was last week, the Cowboy Church held a campfire service, which is just my style. I'll be going there till his whole thing is over I reckon. But anyhow, it's all about the same, just no town, which would not factor in very much anyway. If I could have got to my bank and got some money out, I probably wouldn't even known the difference.

If the government is so tight-ass crazy concerned over my health, then why did they allow selling alcohol, cigarettes, and opioid painkillers, during the lockdown?

These kill more people every year than COVID could even dream of.

That is exactly why the Democrats are so fanatically desperate to increase the death count at any cost no matter what the actual cause of death was. So they can then point to that fake number and say, "See! We saved your life!" At this point, I think the whole thing was massive Kabuki Theater over a minor threat.

I could see the big STUPID coming a long time go. I haven't stopped working. Back in late Feb. I was driving home from work, county road. This woman comes outside to play with her kid. They were wearing masks. There wasn't another house for at least a mile. Ridiculous. I don't/haven't/won't wear a mask.

They have been putting up plexiglas shields in all the stores, at the registers. Whoever is doing that is making a killing right now.

It is a good read.

However, it should be noted that there are dangers from being together outside, especially when tightly packed together with no social distancing and no masks.

The check out procedure Traders Joes has implemented is hilarious - every other register has been closed. The clerk pulls your cart forward and empties it while you wait about ten feet away behind a taped line. After ringing up the purchases he steps back until he's up against the closed register. Only then are you supposed to approach to pay for your stuff. From behind a plastic screen and with a mask on, of course. Its all pretty dramatic.

@Victoria33

We have been going out for groceries every week or two, have always found what we needed (TP didn't show up until yesterday, but we already had plenty).  There really aren't very many places to go out to, the Casinos across the River are still closed up.  I go start my car and idle it every several days to keep the battery from dying.

We're planning a little break Friday...The Riverside Hotel in Laughlin has opened the reservation desk, so we reserved Friday night so we can have one night away from the catz.  That's their firsts night open in a couple of months, so it will be interesting.

You're not going 'on vacation' at all. You are just hopping the river to play at the casino (for one night). LOL At least make it the whole weekend. I would. If you can see your 'vacation' from your house, is it really a vacation in the normal sense of the word? You could take an uber and be there 10 minutes.

Well, it takes a bit longer than 10 minutes to go down the foothills to the river, and my ears pop a couple of times on the way.  It's more to show support for the good folks at the Hotel who have been thrown out of work the past couple of months.  But I expect the Casino won't be open yet, so there's that.

Yeah, a night is just the right size of a break.  The Castle as cage is gilded, but it's still a cage.
