Gov. Andrew Cuomo Announces Start of Chloroquine Test Trials in New York State to Treat Coronavirus

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that New York State has acquired 70,000 doses of hydroxychloroquine, 10,000 doses of zithromax and 750,000 doses of chloroquine to implement drug trials to treat patients with coronavirus, which will begin on Tuesday.

“We’re also implementing the trial drug,” Cuomo said:

    We have secured 70,000 hydrocloroquin; 10,000 zithromax from the federal government. I want to thank the FDA for moving very expeditiously to get us this supply.

    The President ordered the FDA to move and the FDA moved. We’re going to get the supply and the trial will start this Tuesday. The President is optimistic about these drugs and we are all optimistic that it could work.

    I’ve spoken with a number of health officials and there is a good basis to believe that they could work. Some health officials point to Africa, which has a very low infection rate and there’s a theory that because they’re taking these anti-malaria drugs in Africa, it may actually be one of the reasons why the infection rate is low in Africa. We don’t know, but let’s find out and let’s find out quickly. And I agree with the President on that and we’re going to start and we’re going to start Tuesday.

I dislike Cuomo as much as anyone else here, but he actually seems to be stumbling towards competency in handling the virus in New York state (the complete opposite of Komrade Wilhelm, mayor of New York City)...

Let's not go that far. He's shut down half the state's economy and still hasn't been able to slow down the infection rate. New York City is the most infected city in the union for a reason.

Well, there are lots of international businesses based or with major offices in NYC.  And then there's multiple international airports in the NYC area. The party of the Governor and Mayor were not a significant factor.

Just as the States of Washington and California have lots of international businesses and international airports and have high infection numbers. When the screening of passengers arriving from China began on 1/17, the three airports at which this was done were LAX, SFO, and JFK (ATL and ORD began on 1/22). Those were not chosen randomly.

There's a thread running now about how deBlazz actually encouraged people to "defy the virus" and have rallies, back in February after the first travel ban.  It was an in-your-face slap at Trump that probably led to a lot of infectious contact.
