Americans cry out: Quarantine the most vulnerable and let the rest get back to work!
March 22, 2020 | Vivek Saxena

A growing contingent of right-wing and left-wing voices are warning of the genuine doom that awaits America if state and local lawmakers continue shutting down “non-essential businesses” and robbing Americans of the right to earn a living.

While these critics all acknowledge the risks posed by the global coronavirus pandemic itself, they argue that more precise “surgical strikes” are needed versus the carpet-bomb quarantines, lockdowns and shutdowns currently being pursued. For instance, imagine just those infected by the coronavirus or at higher risk of contracting it being quarantined versus entire cities and states.

“We routinely differentiate between two kinds of military action: the inevitable carnage and collateral damage of diffuse hostilities, and the precision of a ‘surgical strike,’ methodically targeted to the sources of our particular peril. The latter, when executed well, minimizes resources and unintended consequences alike,” David L. Katz, the founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, wrote last Friday for The New York Times.

All the prominent voices saying this state of affairs could last three, four or more months are only revealing their total ignorance if the way life works for most of us out here.

We absolutely cannot go that long. All these "nonessential" businesses that have been ordered closed by various governors certainly are essential to the people who own them and work there, and continuing this quarantine unnecessarily will destroy them, both financially and personally.

How the hell do they expect toilet paper to be manufactured if no one is allowed to go to work???

I could go back to my office and be with the other 50-60 people there, but that could very well be a death sentence for my 90 yr old mom, who I look after.  I'll just work from home...

I wonder if there is an amount of time that would satisfy anyone or most people such as that this 15 DAY PERIOD THAT THE 45th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, DONALD JOHN TRUMP TOLD US TO TRY TO CONTAIN THE VIRUS   :patriot:  and what if it succeeds?

I understand the frustration but as of now, I am seeking to follow the guidelines as best I can. It might be a question of doing this will get us through this quicker.

The luxury of apocalypticism
The elites want us to panic about Covid-19 – we must absolutely refuse to do so.
Brendan O'Neill
17th March 2020
Quote
People’s refusal to panic has been a great source of frustration for the establishment in recent years.  ...

How curious. In the past it was hysteria that was seen as a malady of the mind. Now it is the reluctance to kowtow to hysteria, the preference for calm discussion over panic and dread, that is treated as a malady.  ...

But what ties Covid-19 to the other fashionable apocalypses of our nervous elites, including the green apocalypse and the Brexit apocalypse, is the interpretation of it through the language and ideology of the elites’ pre-existing dread, their pre-existing cultural skittishness and moral disarray. Predictably, and depressingly, Covid-19 has been folded into their narrative of horror, into their permanent state of cultural distress, and this is making the task of facing it down even harder. ...

Many governments seem to be driven less by a reasoned, evidence-fuelled strategy of limiting both the spread of the disease and the disorganisation of economic life, than by an urge to be seen to be taking action. They seem motivated more by an instinct to perform the role of worriers about apocalypse, for the benefit of the dread-ridden cultural elites, rather than by the responsibility to behave as true moral leaders who might galvanise the public in a collective mission against illness and a concerted effort to protect economic life. ...

Durprisingly some appear to be unable to grasp that the physical distancing is the best way to get back to work, get freedom back, and get  401Ks back up, etc.

All of this over a mere 347 deaths, mostly elderly with underlying/other health issues.... when there were 20,000 regular flu deaths as of March 6.  (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/03/06/update-influenza-deaths-now-total-20000-including-elevated-number-of-136-children/

It's insanity to the nth, running amuck.   And the radical left deep state is gleeful.

What will be the justification be for not going to these same extreme lengths during every flu season.

Sorry, Alan, but coronavirus could be 40 times more deadly than the flu

Sorry  @XenaLee  ; but it's not simple mathematics like you are asserting, I don't know if it could be 40 times worse but it may well be worse to some degree, you are comparing apples to apricots.

How many full flu seasons has the coronavirus been through? None.

Anyway, about all sources if not all, say its worse.  That's a simple rundown.

And National Review has said similar.

Senator Cruz went into self-quarantine, there is no shortage of conservatives wary over this.

20k to 60k dead per year, every year. Maybe they'll say dying from a SARs-like virus is worse than dying from a garden variety flu.

Ironic that  you mention Cruz to bolster your personal stance.   I thought you detested and loathed Cruz.   Odd, that.

People in essential services are allowed to go to work.

Yeah, cause... you know... death is bad in varying degrees.  Probably depending upon if you caught the virus from a homophobe, racist, sexist rightie... or a precious, pure as the diven snow, if not saintly illegal leftie.

And we all know how much the RL "cares" about deaths, right?   Over 42 MILLION abortions in 2019 alone.   Wonder how many of those were full-term, live, fully formed infants.

Irrelevant response (and wrong and I can prove it but That's a sidetrack) I will repeat, if there is nothing to this, why did conservatives like Ted Cruz self-quarantine? Why is almost every country taking the same measures?

Ok, I think I have made the point made dozens of times here.  End of, I do not need another deflection or even smear. Odd that.

That's because those living inside the Beltway will continue getting paid for months on end whether they go to work or not.

Not odd at all.

I don't believe the massive over-reaction, shutdown, etc. is the correct way to address this issue.  The end result is going to be far worse on America and on Americans than the actual virus would be.  Driving up the national debt to zillions, in order to hand out free $$$ willy nilly is also not the way to go (and I could definitely use the cash).   But we all know that Trump has never been particularly concerned with fiscal conservatism or debt-related policies.
