He was sucking up to the left for many years previous, and it was just another suck as far as I was concerned.

McCain was the MSM's favorite Republican because he was constantly sticking a knife into his fellow Republicans. And the MSM loved him for it.

No republican would have won in 2008. We were in a financial crisis and an unpopular war and the incumbent was a republican. McCain paid for that

We would have won every election for the next 20 years if the GOP had gotten behind Bush's Social Security Reform.  Actually allowing the Average Joe to direct his Social Security taxes into an actual investment fund instead of giving it to the government?  They would be voting Republican for the rest of their lives.

But I digress.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

If someone has been to Sweden, check this out:
Quote
Can't make America like Sweden without more capitalism
    Barry Fagin Mar 5, 2020

There appear to be two kinds of socialism nowadays: Bad and Good. Like the Munchkins in Oz, we’re supposed to ask if someone is a Good Socialist or a Bad Socialist. Maoist China, Stalinist Russia, modern Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela, apparently those are all Bad Socialism. Good socialism is different. Good socialism is Sweden, Denmark and Norway. They do socialism right, and that’s the way America should be going.

There’s only one problem with that view: It’s completely wrong. Sweden, Denmark and Norway are not socialist countries. They are free-market, capitalist countries with extensive social services, supported by high taxes paid mostly by the middle-class and poor. But that doesn’t make them socialist, or even some sort of midpoint between capitalist and socialist extremes. Taking America toward them means making us more capitalist, not less. Let’s see why.

Sweden has school choice, in which parents get vouchers that can be applied to public or private schools. Want America to be more like Sweden? Give us school vouchers.

That's not directly talking about the Healthcare system of course, still.

Norway is closing everything down:
Quote
Norway to close ports, airports from Monday to stop coronavirus: PM
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-norway-airport-idUSKBN2110Z8

I heard this just on the radio so, I don't know if it's true but they said Italy has a national healthcare system and that seems to be failing.

Maybe Spain too.

Also, note this, in Italy, they are told this so maybe they can take care of the youth, so even if the "youth" usually survive this virus, apparently, they are having trouble with it if they need to survive the virus.

Norway should not be used as a reference for economic policy. They are very wealthy with natural resources. Their oil revenue allows them to have social services beyond what any other country without those inherent resources can provide without bankrupting the state. In other words, it is not a valid apples to apples comparison.

Yes, the Italian situation sort of demonstrates a failure of National Healthcare if that is what their system is, I don't know.

Triage, reality if you like it or not

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triagez

I hate the fact that some of the most vulnerable, the most elderly and the sickest may be left to die but if and when faced with limited healthcare resources and personnel, that is what can and exactly what will happen – triage.

So yes if there is only one ICU bed and one ventilator left and two patients who need it, the one with the greatest possibility for recovery will get it.  So yes, the 95-year-old with Alzheimer's and cancer is going to be bumped in favor of the 35-year-old mother of 3 who is otherwise healthy but will die without it.

Quote
Triage: The process of sorting people based on their need for immediate medical treatment as compared to their chance of benefiting from such care. Triage is done in emergency rooms, disasters, and wars, when limited medical resources must be allocated to maximize the number of survivors. Triage in this sense originated in World War I. Wounded soldiers were classified into one of three groups: those who could be expected to live without medical care, those who would likely die even with care, and those who could survive if they received care.

It only makes some sort of sense if you remove all the "you" words from the post.  As it is, it's just another personal attack from one who has had every.  Single. Argument.  Shot to pieces.

I did assume the collective 'you'.

Anecdote: TRIAGE.

Had lunch with fellow boardmember for our non-profit.

I mentioned the Italy storyfrom (One Doctor and One report) about "Triage."

He said he is a trained "first responder, and he knows about triage.

He is the primary care giver to his 95 year old father. He said he understood that medical pros know they will face tough decisions.

OTOH online virtual signalers will moan and groan, with no answers.

Anecdote:

Neil Savaedra (popular Hispanic announcer, show "Jesus Christ". Kidney transplant patient), KFI AM 640 radio, Lost Angeles

Real time I am gettig  high quality information from this source.

Volunteer efforts in my town were mentioned this morning.

I think it's obvious they would do something different if it was as bad as y'all are trying to suggest. They won't though, ever, because their way is working well enough for them. Every system has issues. They think theirs is good though, and will continue to work on improvements.

If things were really falling apart people would notice. The government wouldn't be about it. Things would change. The arguments y'all have presented are a combination of anecdotes and propaganda designed to scare Americans like you into believing Europe is nightmare fuel. It's just not the case.

Europe's primary medical tech comes from America. You seem to think that tech would just happen anyway if we were like Europe. If that were so, Europe would already have more innovation than we do because they have a larger population to create it.

American tech saves countless lives the world over. It is the free market that creates it. Chain down the free market and get less of it.

We hear a lot about the high cost of healthcare and pharmaceuticals in America and that is certainly true compared to other countries.  Usually people demand some kind of government intervention to bring those cost down but they forget that there is a consequence for doing that.

How do you bring the cost of healthcare down including pharmaceuticals while at the same time encouraging innovation and discovery? I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I don’t even have a clear answer

Pretty sure it wasn’t sincerity on his part that made him say what he did.

And that is the central flaw in any socialist scheme.  Leftists choose to ignore the innovation factor, except to say government has to do it.  They are perpetually surprised to learn that R&D is mostly done in the private sector, and not the government.

I’m not gonna pick on him too much because he’s not here to defend himself but at times he was able to defend his argument with a link or something but too often his response was to summarily dismiss information  that he did not want to hear and that is a human trait that we all fall victim to from time to time

But back to the subject at hand. I saw a blip on the news where the US has something like 96,000 ICU beds and by the time this virus runs it’s course, we could have 200,000 individuals needing them. I think there’s going to be some very tough, heart wrenching decisions made in this country  should that come to pass and I pray it doesn’t
