Medical professional at Los Angeles airport tests positive for coronavirus

A medical professional conducting coronavirus screenings at Los Angeles International Airport has tested positive for the virus, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Wednesday.

The person began to exhibit cold-like symptoms on Feb. 29 and visited their primary care doctor for a COVID-19 test the next day. The test came back positive, DHS said in a statement.

DHS headquarters was alerted to the situation late Tuesday night, spokeswoman Heather Swift said in a statement.

New Hampshire coronavirus patient broke quarantine to attend Dartmouth Business event

A coronavirus patient disregarded directions to remain quarantined and attended a Dartmouth Business School event in Vermont on Feb. 28, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.

State epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan said the unidentified man had recently traveled to Italy, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe, and that a second man is believed to have contracted the virus from him, although it remains unclear if it was transmitted at the Dartmouth event.

“Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center [DHMC] has announced that the first person identified as a positive case is an employee. DHMC has identified staff who may have been exposed through close contact with the patient and will monitor those individuals’ self-monitoring or self-isolating,” the department added. “At this time, DHMC is not aware of exposure to any patients in clinical areas.”

Does the World Health Organization have the freedom to do what it needs to do about covid-19?
Health diplomacy is tricky.

...

This isn’t the first time critics have accused China of covering up or downplaying the severity of an infectious disease outbreak. Media coverage recalls China’s poor handling of H5N1 influenza, also known as bird flu, in 1997 — along with denials about SARS in 2002 and 2003.

Has the international community been too willing to accommodate the Chinese government because of its political and economic influence? In reality, the story isn’t that simple, and it’s not just about China. Disease diplomacy is tricky, and covid-19 is proving just how hard it is for the global community to respond to infectious diseases.

...

With a new infectious disease outbreak originating in China, WHO may have decided the best way to get the Chinese government to cooperate is by playing “good cop” — praising China’s efforts and thanking Beijing for its cooperation as a way of keeping it on board and engaged with WHO. Rather than highlighting China’s lack of information sharing, WHO officials may have calculated that “naming and shaming” would be unlikely to produce a better outcome.

WHO is in bed with Chicoms. WHO is underfunded and corrupt.

They parrot the Party line.

Just for fun check out some of the local outbreaks.

Ebola. Malaria. Cholera.

From Dec. 1 to Jan. 31 there were 19 cases of MERS-CoV with 8 deaths reported in Saudi Arabia.

There is an ongoing outbreak of Ebola in Africa.

Malaria is making a comeback in Venezuela.

With the Cholera cases and poor living conditions in Yemen, when Covid hits there the death toll could be huge.

I almost wonder if the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong and a free speech outlet, pretty much) should run such an "iffy" article on a human possibly passing the coronavirus to a dog but there it is and probably still informative.

Quote
Coronavirus: Hong Kong dog’s infection not confirmed until blood tests, government health adviser says

The government said the Pomeranian had a ‘low-level infection’ after it repeatedly tested ‘weak positive’

But City University professor insists only a screening for antibodies can confirm the diagnosis

Karen Zhang   5 Mar, 2020

The dog said to have contracted the coronavirus in Hong Kong was still not a confirmed case, a government health adviser cautioned on Thursday, adding that the conclusion hinged on pending blood test results.

Professor Vanessa Barrs of City University offered the clarification a day after the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said the Pomeranian, which belongs to an infected patient, had a “low-level infection” as it had repeatedly tested “weak positive”.

The dog’s infection was likely to be the first reported case of human-to-animal transmission of Covid-19, the deadly illness caused by the pathogen.

How Computer Modeling Of COVID-19's Spread Could Help Fight The Virus

Scientists who use math and computers to simulate the course of epidemics are taking on the new coronavirus to try to predict how this global outbreak might evolve and how best to tackle it.

But some say more could be done to take advantage of these modeling tools and the researchers' findings.

"It is sort of an ad hoc, volunteer effort, and I think that's something that we could improve upon," says Caitlin Rivers, an infectious diseases modeler with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

In her view, "modeling plays a really important role in understanding how an outbreak is unfolding, where it might be going, and what we should be thinking through."

But only a small number of the modelers of epidemics work for the federal government, she says. Most are in academia, and they don't have formal relationships with officials who have to make key public health decisions.

Still, they are highly motivated to put their skills to use for the public good. They got to work almost as soon as the first reports of a new virus in China emerged in late December.

They've made similar efforts for past outbreaks, such as Ebola and Zika. But this time around felt different, people in the field say.

"I've never seen the modeling community so galvanized, you know — around this outbreak, and willing to share and collaborate," says Cecile Viboud, a scientist at the Fogarty International Center, based at the National Institutes of Health...........

Coronavirus screening may miss two-thirds of infected travelers entering U.S.

This is part of our Coronavirus Update series in which Harvard specialists in epidemiology, infectious disease, economics, politics, and other disciplines offer insights into what the latest developments in the COVID-19 outbreak may bring.

As many thousands of students prepare to decamp for warmer climes over spring break, a Harvard epidemiologist warned that traveler screening may catch just one in three symptomatic cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, meaning there already could be hundreds of U.S. cases that slipped through earlier screenings.

Marc Lipsitch, head of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics, said Wednesday that recent modeling compared the number of people likely exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms with the number caught by traveler-screening programs, using the robust screening program in Singapore as a global gold standard.

The result showed that most countries’ procedures miss two-thirds of travelers exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, a finding that Lipsitch said may explain the recent appearance of a cluster of cases in Washington, where 10 people have died. Lipsitch said travelers sick with COVID-19 likely arrived in the U.S. four to six weeks earlier and simply were missed in screening, leading to the Seattle area outbreak.

“I think you could have certainly hundreds, if not more, cases around the United States by this point,” Lipsitch said. “The problem with giving a firm number … is that there’s a lot of randomness in whether a particular a case does or doesn’t spark a chain of transmission.”..........

Passengers left scrambling as British airline Flybe collapses amid coronavirus travel fears

British airline Flybe abruptly shut down Thursday, causing chaos for passengers who were slated to travel on the airline and leading the U.K.'s Civil Aviation Authority as well as train and bus services to step in to try to mitigate the upheaval.

Flybe collapsed Thursday amid drops in demand caused by the new coronavirus.

Northern Ireland resident Xenia Pestova Bennett, 40, was briefly stranded in Bournemouth, England, after a concert. Bennett was about to check out of her hotel room and head to the airport when she received a text telling her not to bother.

Trump Solves Problem Caused by Obama-Era Regulation Which Was Stalling Ability to Test for Coronavirus

Posted at 6:30 pm on March 4, 2020 by Nick Arama

...

But one of the reasons that testing on a state level has been stalled was actually because of an Food and Drug administration regulation instituted by Barack Obama.

The regulation demanded that state run laboratories could only use medical tests approved by the FDA.

While it might ordinarily seem reasonable to prevent questionable testing, it is a silly rule in the middle of an emergent threat from a new virus and it could prevent people from being properly diagnosed.

The resolution also calls for transparency and cooperation from the government of the People's Republic of China and the Communist Party of China.

The resolution is sponsored by Senators Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey), Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), Cory Gardner (R-Colorado), Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts), and John Barrasso (R-Wyoming).

Lovely,

With an up to 14 day incubation period, I think we might be surprised how far this has spread.

2 Canadian insurance companies stop covering coronavirus-related trip cancellations

Other companies will likely 'jump on the bandwagon,' industry expert predicts
Sophia Harris · CBC News · Posted: Mar 05, 2020

Two major Canadian travel insurance providers — Manulife and TuGo — will no longer cover new customers who need to cancel their trips due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Travellers with regular trip cancellation insurance typically have been able to get reimbursed if, after booking their trip, Ottawa issued a coronavirus-related advisory to avoid non-essential travel to their destination.

However, Manulife and TuGo will no longer offer this type of coverage. Both companies told CBC News that the coronavirus is now a "known" issue and therefore cancellation coverage no longer applies — as it's designed for unexpected mishaps.

The article goes on to say, if they don't do this, they may be facing millions of dollars in claims.

The article goes on to say, if they don't do this, they may be facing millions of dollars in claims.

Doesn't the industry already offer insurance for "acts of god" type of travel cancellations?

With an up to 14 day incubation period, I think we might be surprised how far this has spread.

Early articles put the incubation period as long as 24 days.

The 14 day feelgood quarantine is not going to stop this at all.

Exactly....

No telling how many of us have it already.  And since it seems the disease isn't impacting the younger demographics as much , there are probably huge numbers of asymptomatic cases out there too.

Coronavirus: Italy says it's had 41 new COVID-19 deaths in just 24 hours
https://www.euronews.com/2020/03/05/two-more-people-die-from-covid-19-in-france-says-the-country-s-health-ministry

Italy says it's had 41 new COVID-19 deaths in just 24 hours.

The country's civil protection agency said on Thursday evening that 3,858 people had been infected and 148 had died.

It came as the UK and Switzerland announced their first deaths from the disease.

Earlier on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged people not to give up fighting the outbreak.

It has now killed 3,281 people globally and infected more than 95,000.

"This is not a drill, this is not a time to give up, this is not a time for excuses, this is a time for pulling out all the stops," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said....

I am very interested in getting demographic, (age and conditon specifically) breakdowns of deaths, but it seems these details are slow in coming.

At this point it is inevitable that it is going sweep across the US and the rest of the world.

But the slower it progresses the better the outcomes will be. The worst case is millions coming down with serious symptoms all at the same time and there are not enough resources to treat them all. Then the death rate will soar.

If the spread remains slow enough to treat people it will be bad but not nearly as bad as it could have been.

It could also mutate into something more mild - or the other way.

Medicare to cover testing for the coronavirus

Chris Kissell 3 hrs ago

Here is a rare bit of good news for older Americans worried about contracting COVID-19 — the official name for what is more commonly referred to as “the coronavirus.” If you have Medicare Part B, it will cover the cost of testing for the disease so long as a few conditions are met.

Patients usually pay nothing for covered diagnostic lab tests, the Medicare program said in an announcement Wednesday.

Medicare, the federal health insurance program that primarily serves people age 65 and older, will cover the coronavirus test if:

Your health care provider orders the test.
You got it on or after Feb. 4.
Your health care provider waits until after April 1 to submit an insurance claim for it.

If I read that correctly the fatality rate is a little under 10% for all the people 65 and over that get COVID-19 and 12 times worse than the flu. Assuming those stats are correct.

12 deaths from the coronavirus so far and so far known to be in the US, 11th death for Washington state reported Thursday:

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/03/coronavirus-death-toll-rises-12-latest-updates-200305231909069.html

So, yes, coronavirus has probably spread beyond what we know but from those we know of, see above.

Since this disease has a high rate of asymptomatic cases, high variabity of incubation time (now understood to be i 14-24 day range) that that  is an understatement.   Like I said earlier, don't be surprised if one of us right now has it as we post.  But it is becoming clearer and clearer that this disease in some ways is much like flu in its targeting of the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.  With that data becoming more evident, I hope Pence and his task force starts working contingency plans to protect our nation's elderly.

That looks if I am not mistaken the same as what was reported by the Chinese government.(COVID-19) .

I guess the CDC now feels comfortable with that data.  Seems the 3% Mortality Rate of reported cases seems to be a coalescing number.  But a disclaimer, I would venture that there is and will be a ton of asymptomatic cases that are going to escape the Epidemiologist numbers crunchers.

Yippee.  Those over 65 can get tested .... what about those 60-65?  And ... there is no vaccine, nothing that would wipe out the virus. So you get tested, they quarantine you ...and what about treatment??

Releasing suspected people with corona after 14 days seems to be a big problem.  We have university students coming back from Italy and they are going to "self quarantine" for 14 days.  That will probably prove to be useless.  Where are they going to quarantine them?  To the dorm?  Send them back to their home state for awhile?

Can anyone say pandemic?

Thousands of US residents have been asked by state governments to 'self-quarantine.' Here's what that looks like

With US coronavirus cases topping 220 across 19 states and the death toll climbing to more than a dozen, state governments have asked thousands of residents to seclude themselves from the rest of the community to help contain the virus.
In New York alone, more than 2,500 people were instructed to self-quarantine as health officials scour for anyone who may have been exposed to the state's first coronavirus cases. At least 22 have tested positive and are in isolation.
In California, health officials said Thursday more than 9,700 returning travelers were told to stay at home and monitor their health. Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency earlier this week after California saw its first virus-related death.
As numbers climb, states are grappling to keep an eye on the thousands of residents shuttered in their homes who may have come in contact with someone infected in efforts to stop the spread of the illness............

.............But as more individuals are forced to stay home, communities are also having to come up with solutions to accommodate their needs -- financial stability and food.
Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee announced the state would assist both employers and employees, with efforts such as providing paid leave benefits for workers who need to take time off.
If the virus results in a "mass layoff or closure," the governor said the state will work to provide resources and funding to help "impacted workers get connected to unemployment benefits and re-employment services, including re-training, worker support services, and referrals to other social services." ..........................

As it turns out, the case they have in Ft. Bend county TX was in Stafford, which is fairly close to me, but not in Sugar Land, where I live.
Home to the Stafford Ice House, where I met up with friends and have a few beers.
In fact, I am supposed to go there tonight, as 2 of my friends there have birthdays today.

EMT's came to the home of the person in their 70's and took him to the hospital.
The EMT's are being looked at now.
Some of the Washington State cases involved EMT's responding to people with the virus.

This is close to where I live, but not exactly down the street, about 5 miles away.
News also broke last night, about a case in unincorporated northwest Harris county.

Guess where I work?

Of course it will depend on just where in Harris county this is.....

And the original article in Chinese though, the bing translator was able to bring it up in English if one really wanted to read it, I did "simple Chinese":  http://www.xinhuanet.com/2020-03/04/c_1125660473.htm

And this is why, we don't want China to have so much dominance.

I don't buy talk that something will bring a regime down, it be Venezuela or Iran. I would say, it would seem possible but remote.

Quote
EXCLUSIVE: Iranian Resistance…Regime’s Coronavirus Corruption Will Finally Bring Down Mullahs
by Tsarizm Staff March 6, 20200611

“We estimate via our sources that over 1500 have died, and that is a conservative estimate.”

Washington] CD Media sat down with Alireza Alireza Jafarzadeh, the deputy director of the Washington office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, who is credited with exposing Iranian nuclear sites in Natanz and Arak in 2002, triggering International Atomic Energy Agency inspections, to discuss the coronavirus situation in the Iran.

“The virus in Iran is rapidly killing people and has now spread throughout the country. What the world needs to know is the role the regime has played in this development. They allowed the virus to enter Iran, did nothing to prevent its spread, and are actively profiting from the sale on the black market goods needed to treat the people. There has been extreme incompetence. They have brought in the Revolutionary Guards to suppress the people instead of helping them.

“As with the revolt against the sudden rise in fuel prices, instead of helping the people, they bring in the IRCG to just shoot them. After the regime downed the Ukrainian passenger airline, instead of telling the families the truth, they just killed them, literally going after the families of the victims who were seeking accountability. Now they are doing the same with the virus outbreak.
