By Justine Coleman - 01/13/20 08:14 PM EST

U.S. citizen Mustafa Kassem died in Egyptian prison, where he has been since 2013, after going on a hunger strike.

Kassem, 54, died of heart failure following the hunger strike, which he is believed to have started in September 2018, according to Pretrial Rights International, who represented the American captive.

“Last Thursday, he ceased taking liquids and was shortly thereafter transferred to a local hospital, where he passed away today in the late afternoon (local time),” the Pretrial Rights International said in a statement obtained by ABC News.

Pompeo Angry Over Death of US Citizen Jailed in Egypt
By Associated Press
January 19, 2020 12:26 PM

CAIRO - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "expressed outrage" to Egypt's president on Sunday at the death of an American citizen who insisted he had been wrongfully held in an Egyptian prison, according to a State Department spokeswoman.

Pompeo's sharp remarks signal the U.S. government was putting the death of Mustafa Kassem, 54, following his protracted hunger strike last week, high on the diplomatic agenda.

Pompeo raised his concerns to President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi about Kassem's "pointless and tragic death" on the sidelines of an international peace summit in Berlin that aims to end Libya's civil war.
