The question is, Will President Trump draw a line in the sand, like Baracky Obama did?  Little Baracky's line sure scared the shit out of all the terrorists, didn't it?   :rolling:

VIDEOS: Iran-backed Iraqi militias withdraw from US Embassy in Baghdad

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2020/01/videos-iran-backed-iraqi-militias-withdraw-from-us-embassy-in-baghdad/

This article was originally published by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and is reprinted with permission.

Iraq’s military said pro-Iran paramilitary groups have withdrawn from outside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, a day after a mob attacked the compound, prompting U.S. authorities to deploy hundreds more troops to the region.

The January 1 statement by Iraq’s military command followed a call earlier in the day from the Popular Mobilization Forces umbrella group for its supporters to withdraw from the compound.

The umbrella group, which is made up of mainly Shi’ite militia members, had been one of the lead organizers of the angry protests at the American facility in response to U.S. air strikes in Iraq earlier in the week.

The crowds chanted “‘Death to America!” and set fires as they breached an outer perimeter of the embassy on December 31.

They did not, however, enter the main compound. Many of those involved were seen carrying flags of the Kataib Hizbullah, or Hezbollah Brigades, a paramilitary group supported by Iran.

The violence prompted U.S. troops protecting the facility to fire tear gas to try and disperse the crowds, who had camped out overnight.

News of  a big new escalation at Baghdad airport tonight. Two incidents:
1) three Katyusha rockets exploded.
2) A drone strike killed a top Shiite militia leader, the PMF head of protocol Mohammed Ridha, "with his guests."
(Who were his guests??)

A few places are reporting a strike, drone strike, early reporting.

About an hour or two ago.

The breaking news outlets are saying some sort of attack happened... but can we be sure it was they? Or other?

Rockets hit Baghdad International Airport: report
By Tal Axelrod - 01/02/20 06:53 PM EST

Several people were wounded when rockets struck Baghdad International Airport, Reuters reported.

The explosions are part of a deteriorating security situation in the capital of Iraq.

Iraq's Security Media Cell, which releases information regarding Iraqi security, said several Katyusha rockets hit the airport, landing near the cargo hall. Two cars were set on fire and a number of people were injured, the group said in a tweet.

The nighttime attack, for which no group has yet claimed responsibility, came amid high tensions between the U.S. after an Iranian-backed militia stormed the American embassy in Baghdad, leading to a spike in security concerns and tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Co-leader of Baghdad US Embassy attack visited Obama White House in 2011

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2020/01/co-leader-of-baghdad-us-embassy-attack-visited-obama-white-house-in-2011/

Quote
One of the Iran-backed Iraqi militia leaders responsible for this week’s attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was welcomed into the White House during the Obama administration.

“The attack today was orchestrated by terrorists – Abu Mahdi al Muhandis and Qays al-Khazali – and abetted by Iranian proxies – Hadi al Amari and Faleh al-Fayyad,” Pompeo tweeted on Tuesday, along with three photos.

Hadi al Amiri formerly served as a commander of the Badr Corps militia – funded by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — in the 1980s and 1990s. He was serving as Iraq’s transportation minister at the time of his 2011 visit to the Obama White House, the Washington Times first reported in December 2011.

Al Amiri had accompanied Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to the White House where al-Maliki delivered a joint press conference with former President Obama. Al-Maliki has long been suspected of acting in the interests of Iran.

Anyone who tries to overrun the US Embassy in Baghdad will ‘run into a buzzsaw,’ says Joint Chiefs chairman

Military Times by  Shawn Snow and Aaron Mehta 1/2/2020

The top U.S. military commander shot out a warning Thursday to Iranian-backed militias and their supporters that attempts to storm the American embassy in Baghdad would be akin to running into a “buzzsaw” and that the U.S. will strike again to prevent further attacks.

The comments from Joint Chiefs chairman Army Gen. Mark Milley come following a Pentagon decision Tuesday to deploy 750 paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne to Kuwait and the rapid reinforcement of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad with 100 Marines assigned to the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force, Crisis Response–Central Command.

A U.S. defense official told Military Times that several thousand additional troops could be deployed to the Middle East in the wake of demonstrations stemming from U.S. airstrikes on Dec. 29 that struck an Iran-backed militia known as Kata’ib Hizbollah — a group U.S. officials have blamed for a recent spate of rocket attacks against Iraqi bases housing coalition troops.

See, some folks are saying WE, nosotros, carried out this airstrike or drone strike against a Hezbollah leader, so that is just a tip. I don't know if this will be proven true.

U.S have just killed one of the PMF leaders.
Mohammed Ridha [head of protocol ] & five of his associates.

U.S targeted them after they left baghdad airport.

 Hashd al-Shaabi should learn
there will be a lot more tango downs on PMF, U.S made that clear days ago.

So, hell, I don't know.  This looks like a road to war but maybe unavoidable.  No idea.

Baghdad airport attack: senior Iran-aligned militia official killed amid US tensions

Quote
A top official of an Iraqi Shia militia organisation has been reported killed in a motorcade outside Baghdad airport, raising the stakes in an already tense standoff between the US and pro-Iranian forces in Iraq’s capital.

The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) announced that its head of public relations and protocol, Mohammed Ridha, was killed in a vehicle as he was escorting “guests” from the airport. Some reports said the attack was carried out by a drone, others that it was a volley of rockets.

The identity of the “guests” and how many were killed was not made clear, but there were reports that there were Iranians among the casualties. There was also no confirmation of who had launched the attack. ...

OK, drone? Likely operated by the US, but not certainly so. Whatever the drone fired was probably guided or aimed at fairly close range.

Katyusha rockets? IIRC, those are a WW2 vintage design, unguided, basically aimed by training and elevation with a more or less known ballistic curve. Not likely to be US, but unless my memory is off, not guided.

Why was a leader in a terror group moving more or less freely - or so he thought - about Baghdad?

Mike Doran, assistant foreign policy advisor under Bush, 2000s, he tweets out (and I'd be skeptical of it as much as the multiple reports that Baghdadi was hit in past  years):

Soleimani is one of their big wheels and yes, said to be responsible for deaths of Americans, other coalition soldiers in the war in Iraq. So, this would be huge but color me skeptical. What in the heck would Soleimani be doing at the Baghdad airport, really?

Taking out the leader of groups making war on US forces is not "assassination", IMO. Any more than was shooting down Admiral Yamamoto in WW2.

If this happened and if the US did it: good riddance; it's a message to Iranian leaders than we know more of their doings than should make them comfortable.

Iraqi TV: Iran’s Gen. Soleimani killed in Baghdad strike

Baghdad (AP) — Iraqi TV and three Iraqi officials said Friday that Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, has been killed in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport.

The officials said the strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Their deaths are a potential turning point in the Middle East and are expected to draw severe retaliation from Iran and the forces it backs in the Middle East against Israel and American interests.

The PMF blamed the United States for an attack at Baghdad International Airport Friday.

Airstrike at Baghdad airport kills Iran’s most revered military leader, Qassem Soleimani, Iraqi state television reports

BREAKING: It was not clear who carried out the strike, but the death of Soleimani, the Iranian Quds Force commander, seems certain to send tensions soaring between the United States and Iran. This story will be updated.

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said Thursday that Iran and its proxies may be preparing renewed strikes on U.S. personnel in Iraq, even as the Trump administration increases the number of troops in the region to guard against what it characterized as sustained Iranian aggression.

“There are some indications out there that they may be planning additional attacks,” Esper said at the Pentagon, a day after members of an Iranian-linked militia, Kataib Hezbollah, withdrew from the area around the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad following their assault on the diplomatic facility.

“So do I think they may do something?” he said. “Yes, and they will likely regret it.”
