Just curious as I'm not sure what you are saying. I really believe that the desire for material betterment predates the French Revolution. It's been going on since the first caveman wanted a larger cave to live in.

What I'm saying is plain and simple.
Since Adam; pre-dating all structured religions, Man was self-governed by the Natural Law;
the moral order that allowed him to survive and thrive, over time.
To achieve this, he needed a powerful spiritual sensibility, exemplified by the Art he produced, commencing in the Fertile Crescent.
The French Enlightenment was a revolt against those spiritual attitudes/values, exalting material betterment as Man's highest aspiration and was fostered by the simultaneous birth of Capitalism.
Simply compare the quality of Architecture, Literature, Philosophy, Sculpture, even Science; before
and after 1750 and then pause and reflect!!!
