I am traveling with a friend, at what seems like a snail’s pace, through the Burgundy countryside. In truth Françoise is just respecting the 80 kph (50 mph) speed limit on country roads, introduced last year.

We’re beetling along the Route de Sermoise in the Nièvre department of Burgundy, through typical landscapes of oak and plane trees lining the roads, Charolais beef cattle, and old farmhouses with shingle red roofs.
