House Republicans on Thursday said closed-door testimony from Kurt Volker, the former U.S. special envoy for Ukraine, does not support allegations against President Trump that Democrats are using to launch an impeachment inquiry.
“He has said nothing that coincides what the Democrats are saying with their whole impeachment narrative,†said Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee and a staunch supporter of Trump.
Jordan, who appeared alongside a group of conservative Republicans and Trump allies, declined to talk specifically about Volker’s deposition, which is continuing in a secure hearing room in the Capitol.
Jordan described Volker as “unbelievably knowledgeable about what was going on in Ukraine,†and he added, “Not one thing he has said comports with any of the Democrats’ impeachment narrative. Not one thing.â€
Democrats are conducting an impeachment inquiry into Trump’s requests to Ukrainian government officials to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, who is running for president.
Reporters asked Jordan and the other GOP lawmakers to respond to Trump’s comments earlier Thursday that he was asking China to investigate Biden.
Jordan said he has been in the deposition with Volker for two hours.
“We don’t know what the president said and we haven’t looked at it,†Jordan said.
