Stigmatization was killing Colombia’s social leaders, now it’s killing political candidates
by Adriaan Alsema September 4, 2019
Election observers on Tuesday warned that stigmatization is fueling deadly violence in Colombia after a mayoral candidate died in a savage massacre.
The murder of Liberal Party mayoral candidate Karina Garcia from the southwestern Cauca province brutally reminded Colombia of the extreme violence that has marred the country’s politics for decades.
Days before her death, Garcia had urged her competitors in the race for the mayorship of the Suarez municipality to stop stigmatizing her or lying about her policy proposals.

Why opening your mouth can get you killed in Colombia
by Adriaan Alsema March 2, 2018
An increase in killings of social leaders in Colombia is due to the absence of state authority, failures in an ongoing peace process and the stigmatization of citizens defending peace with FARC guerrillas, according to a new report.
Social leaders, people who represent their community in all kinds of disputes, have always been vulnerable in Colombia because of the country’s weak and corrupt state system.
This traditionally has been an issue in the countryside where the state has traditionally been weak and disputes in some cases are settled by force rather than under the rule of law.

And even if Marxist FARC guerillas are suspected, there's quite a few bad characters on there, on the right too.
