"What are we doing to combat this problem?"
That was the very first question asked. That's the same thing that we're asking about the mass shootings.
The good news is that, as was highlighted in the video, the situation in Chicago is actually getting better. Hopefully we get a grip on this "mass shooting" situation and lower those occurrences as well.
It all needs our attention.
I don't think it's getting better in Chicago. On any holiday weekend in particular, the number of shootings is in the double digits.
Chicago is but one example, mainly because of the high number of shootings. Most major cities have the same problem. Closest big city to me is Pittsburgh. Every day there is a shooting or two. Sometimes more.
Most of these killings occur in bad neighborhoods where gangs rule. Used to be gangs just shot at each other. Now they shoot innocent bystanders, sometimes small children.
But notice that when any politician or celebrity talks about remedying gun violence, they are only focused on the mass shootings like the one recently in El Paso. And they focus on the perp who likely acquired his firearms legally.
So the remedies these people come up with target the law abiding citizen who acquired his or her firearm legally -- the one who uses his weapons for sport or to protect himself/herself and loved ones. -- the ones who would never go out and shoot up a Walmart.
But the gangbangers who shoot at each other in the ghettos are largely ignored. These guys get their weapons on the street. They don't go to a licensed dealer. They don't submit to background checks. As long as they have the right amount of money, they can buy whatever firearm they want.
Bottom line is that gun laws -- background checks, so-called "red flag laws" and such -- are not going to prevent gun violence. Even if this country decided to confiscate every privately owned firearm, someone will find a way to get a gun somewhere. Or if they can't get a gun, they will use something else -- knives, bombs, trucks loaded with explosives, whatever. Meanwhile, the citizen who wants to protect his family and property is out of luck.
Our Founding Fathers instituted the Second Amendment for a reason -- to protect against tyranny and lawlessness. Taking away a legally acquired firearm or preventing a law abiding citizen from obtaining a firearm is tyranny. No one should allow any government to violate the Second Amendment.
