Buttigieg doubles down on scrapping Electoral College: 'It's undemocratic'

Democratic presidential candidate and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg doubled down on his support for getting rid of the Electoral College in an interview that aired Thursday on NBC News, calling the institution "undemocratic."

"Twice in my young lifetime I've seen the American people overruled by the Electoral College," Buttigieg said. "It's time for that to go because it's undemocratic."

Pressed by NBC's Harry Smith on whether Republicans would back scrapping the institution, Buttigieg suggested making the reform years down the road.

"So maybe when we make this reform, we set it to take effect in the 2030s, when it's not clear which party is going to benefit," he said. "But at the end of the day, I think most Americans, of any party, ought to be able to get on board with the idea that one person, one vote, counting equally, is the fairest way to choose our president."

NBC noted that Buttigieg's 2020 agenda also includes plans for same-day voter registration nationwide and statehood for Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

IMHO if you really want to see a second Civil War in this country...let the destruction of the EC take place and have the 4 or 5 really deep blue areas in this country dictate to the majority of the people what they can and can't do with their lives.

Only one candidate, in the history of the Electoral College, has ever been denied the Presidency with a majority of the popular vote. That was Sam Tilden in 1876.

I have to remember this the next time I'm talking with a liberal.

Liberals just don't see beyond their personal gratification. They see getting "free stuff" at someone else's expense as enhancing their freedom. They never consider the burden they place on others.

This is political posturing,  nothing more.    The EC won't be abolished;  it would require a Constitutional amendment that would need to be ratified by the smaller states whose political power and influence would be sacrificed.

I think the NPV Compact movement has reached its high-water mark.  They have the "Big Blue" high population states and are having to seek out the "Small Blues" to get to their threshold. NV just had the bill vetoed (by a Rat Governor, IIRC).  I think this movement will have a stake in its heart if Trump wins reelection with a majority of the Popular vote.  The NPV nutz would realize the Compact would have caused their State to cast it's EC votes for the hated Donald Trump.  (I know you don't think he'll win at all.)

Secondly, if the necessary number of states do pass it there will be a good Constitutional challenge.

Getting rid of the electoral college obviously would mean all a candidate would have to do is win the majority CA, TX, FL, NY, PA and the heck with winning the rest of the country.
