David Ortiz: Former Boston Red Sox star shot in back in Dominican Republic

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was shot in the back in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, police say.

The three-time World Series champion, 43, is recovering after surgery, the Red Sox said in a statement.

"David's family has confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back/abdominal region," it added.

"We have offered David's family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts."

See link, there appears to be a vague video of showing when this situation in a bar broke out:

I'm not sure what the video shows, except a commotion going on. From what I see, someone is pointing early in the video, they are probably pointing at Ortiz dressed in gray. To me, so far, it appears like a stray bullet might have gotten him, not a targeted shot at this point.

So, this already transpired some hours ago.

Video Shows Sophisticated Attack on David Ortiz, as Ex-Slugger Remains in Intensive Care
By MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN and MARTÍN JOSÉ ADAMES ALCÁNTARA / AP 1:04 PM EDT

(SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic) — Dominican prosecutors say witnesses and security camera footage show that the attempt to kill former Red Sox star David Ortiz was carried out by two men on a motorcycle and two other groups of people in cars, indicating a new level of sophistication in the attack.

The details were contained in a court document obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta, who was captured Tuesday night in the town of Mao in the northern Dominican Republic, was driving a grey Hyundai Accent before mounting the bike driven by 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Feliz García, the document said.

And all of this begs the question, why did they go after him period?

I'll bet the gun man, those involved just wanted to kill a celebrity but there might be more to the equation, just my 2 cents.

Now a bit more comes out, what a tragedy if they had pulled this off, it sounds like the gunman might have just been plain incompetent, thank God....and it seems real lucky nothing Ortiz's vertebrae as a lot of times, that is how gunshot victims end up being in wheelchairs.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT
Authorities have arrested a total of five people directly involved in the attack on David Ortiz, including the alleged gunman, officials said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and have not determined a motive for the attack. However, they said the suspects were offered 400,000 Dominican pesos, or just under $8,000, to kill Ortiz.
