Guaido returns to Venezuela, challenging Maduro
By Rafael Bernal - 03/04/19 12:02 PM EST Venezuelan National Assembly President Juan Guaidó, who is recognized as the country's interim president by more than 50 countries, returned to Caracas Monday after a Latin American tour to shore up support for his claim.
The opposition leader's return to Venezuela amid street protests is a direct challenge to embattled President Nicolás Maduro, who has held on to control of Venezuela's government despite crippling international sanctions.
"Back in our beloved land!" Guaidó tweeted Monday. "Venezuela, we have just passed migration [controls] and we'll move to where our people are."
