President Trump announced early Sunday his administration would host “one of the biggest gatherings†in Washington’s history on the Fourth of July.
“HOLD THE DATE!†Trump said. “It will be called ‘A Salute To America’ and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!â€
Trump floated the event earlier this month at a Cabinet meeting and suggested it could become an annual tradition.
The nation’s capital already features an event on the National Mall on July 4, called A Capitol Fourth, which includes fireworks, a parade, and a free concert.
Last year, Trump pressed for a military parade to celebrate veterans. He ultimately scrapped the idea, blaming local officials for the soaring costs that were expected.
The proposed event divided lawmakers, with those opposed to it arguing a parade was a waste of funds that could go toward helping veterans instead. Critics also said the parade would be reminiscent of military displays put on by authoritarian regimes.
