You get the government you deserve. If people can't be bothered to vote, that's on them.
Agree, in principle. But, I don’t think those of us who voted for de Blasio’s opponents should bear any responsibility. Both candidates were more qualified than de Blasio. But both were destined to lose. It’s a story of demographics. We’re simply out numbered.
New York City is the destination to go to for young illegals, immigrants, oligarchs, schemers, dreamers, old hipsters and millions who just come here from somewhere else just to be someplace. Most have never had an American civics class; they think being a republican is outlawed here because pubbies are so rare. Large numbers have no knowledge of American history or of our traditions or values.
You get elected mayor in NYC by community organizing and with street activism and by courting big money donors, or as in the case of Michael Bloomberg, you do it on your own dime.
But, the real blame goes to a system that tolerates big donors (donors seem to prefer Tammany Hall’s efficiency over City Hall’s bureaucracy to get what they want). They’re the ones who filled de Blasio’s campaign coffers, twice.
And blame should also go to the grunts, those young, politically stunted activists holding a clipboard on the street corner, who do the work and who are drawn to the sweet strains of socialism – like flies to a road apple.
