Colombia suggests alliance with Brazil's Bolsonaro to overthrow Venezuela's Maduro: report
by Adriaan Alsema

A top Colombian official told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that its government will support Brazilian’s far-right President-elect Jair Bolsonaro if he wants to overthrow the socialist government of Venezuela.

According to Folha, a top diplomatic official said that “if [President-elect] Bolsonaro wants to help overthrow Maduro with a military intervention, he will have the support of Colombia.”

According to the anonymous source, Colombian President Ivan Duque and his political patron, the hard-right former President Alvaro Uribe, would agree with a military intervention.

Not a bad idea. We could give them intelligence if they want it.

I believe data shows 3 million people have fled Venezuela in the past few years up until now. I looked it up, Venezuela has a population of around 30, 33 million or so. So, this is close to 10% of the population. Also, to put that in retrospect, that percentage applied to the US would be around, say, 30 million people.

Also, these refugees have fled to Colombia, Brazil and then, to a lesser extent, Ecuador and Peru. So, it sounds like a regional crisis definitely.

I certainly support any effort to fix things in Venezuela, as long as we don't intervene. Like you said, a regional problem.

Quite frankly they don't want our help...

Bloodshed might be worth it if it would cause a permanent change in Venezuela. However, the vast majority of Venezuelans blame Maduro, not socialism, for the country's problems.

Sure, Brazil and Columbia could try to overthrow Maduro. If they succeed, the country would still want to return to socialism. Thus, I don't foresee many Venezuelans supporting the military government that would rule Venezuela. I don't think conservatives need another Chile/Pinochet situation.

Military action could really escalate. I would guess that socialist Peru would get involved. Certainly Cuba would get involved. China would see an opportunity to get a foothold.

Because Venezuelans don't blame socialism for their problems, I think it would be best for Venezuela to fix itself. While that will not happen for another generation or two, I think that containment is better than direct intervention.

"Colombia suggests alliance with Brazil's Bolsonaro to overthrow Venezuela's Maduro"

A little advisory help from The United States would surely come in handy, as well. (perhaps more than just "advisory"...)

Quite frankly, I think they DO.
I would cheer on a "Venuezalan Pinochet".
Chile could not have become where they are today without him.
