BREAKING: 5 Police Officers Shot, One Killed in Florence, SC

Not much is known yet, but it’s being reported that five law enforcement officers have been shot by an un-named suspect who has since been taken into custody in Florence, South Carolina. One officer is reported to have been killed.

Florence County Emergency Management officials said on Facebook around 6 p.m. that a suspect is in custody and the “active shooting situation is over.” Officials are asking people to stay away from the area as “there is still an active crime investigation in progress.”

Another man was also reportedly wounded by the suspect. What touched off the confrontation isn’t known yet and the story is sure to change as more details become available.

South Carolina law enforcement officials have taken one person into custody after the suspect allegedly shot five police officers on Wednesday, killing at least one.

WBTW reported that "according to Chief Deputy Glen Kirby, with the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the suspect surrendered to deputies after talking with a negotiator and has been taken to the hospital for treatment."

Saw an update. One officer dead. Seven officers and one other shot. 20 y/o perp. Not many details yet.

An update to the original story:

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - One suspect is in custody and a Florence police officer is deceased after eight people, seven of which were law enforcement officers, were shot in Florence Wednesday evening.

Sources tell News13 Fred Hopkins is the suspect arrested in the case.

The Associated Press reports that Wednesday night, officers were trying to serve a warrant involving an accusation that a 27-year-old person in the home sexually assaulted a foster child in the home....


Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the officer who died as Terrence Carraway, 52, of Darlington.

To clarify this,the black man in the photo above is the Police Officer who was murdered by the suspect in custody. By ALL reports I have seen or heard,he was a much-respected local cop and a honorable man who is already being missed. There were some of his fellow cops in the background openly crying over his death at the press conference.

@sneakypete, yes, that is a photo of the dead policemen.  In addition to that horrible fact, the police were there because of a foster child being sexually abused.

Shooter is said to be one Frederick Hopkins, 74. White guy. Disbarred lawyer. Vietnam vet collecting disability. Winner of a three-gun shooting contest in 2011.
