President Trump has ordered the declassification of a series of highly sensitive documents related to the Russia investigation, the White House announced Monday.
 
Under the order, classified portions of a surveillance application for former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page and "all text messages relating to the Russia investigation" from former FBI Director James Comey and several other top federal officials could become public.
 
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the decision was made "at the request of a number of committees of Congress, and for reasons of transparency."
 
The move will please conservatives in Congress who have been clamoring for the documents' release, saying it will back up their argument that the Russia investigation has been tainted by political bias.
 
But it is likely to ratchet up tensions with law enforcement officials and Democrats who believe such a move is an example of improper interference in an ongoing investigation.

President Donald Trump has moved to immediately release a tranche of former FBI Director James Comey's text messages and declassify 20 pages of a surveillance application that targeted former campaign adviser Carter Page, his latest offensive against a Russia investigation that has ensnared associates and has consumed Trump's attention for much of his presidency.

The breadth of the order came as a surprise and landed amid a full-court White House effort to shore up the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, as he defends himself against a sexual assault allegation. Trump demanded that the FBI produce 20 pages of the surveillance application — which Republicans on Capitol Hill have suggested would help show anti-Trump bias at the highest levels of the FBI.

According to the statement, Trump declassified 21 pages of the 101-page June 2017 application to obtain a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, to monitor the communications of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page in 2016.

Those pages only make up a small part of the 412 pages of FISA applications and warrants related to Page released by the FBI earlier this year in heavily redacted format.

Each time the warrant was re-submitted for review and extension, additional information was added through intelligence gathered from the previous authorization.  If you don’t see this as cherry picking, you’re not being the least bit objective.
