The number of self-injury deaths from drug overdose and suicide now exceed those from diabetes, according to a new report published online on August 27, 2018, in the journal Injury Prevention.
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, according to the American Diabetes Association. But deaths from drug overdose and suicide — known as self-injury mortality — were just over 29 per 100,000 in 2016 as compared with just under 25 diabetes-related deaths per 100,000, according to this new study. In 2014, those numbers were about even.
